Are we too helpful?

I see this with mining too.
People just say where the best mining sites are, without telling them how to find the best mining sites. Same with sell stations.

Which means that when the devs change something, these players are completely stranded because they never learned how to find out information for themselves, huge screams about nerfs happen because MINING HAS BEEN DESTROYED and so on, and a huge stink is made about how mining is being killed there's NO POSSIBLE WAY TO MAKE CREDITS ANY MORE, IT'S LITERALLY IMPOSSIBLE.

... because they never learned how to make credits without blindly following instructions from someone who figured it out for them.

The best example was the carrier update, people were mad panicking because the borann triple-hotspot went away, as though the only place you could get LTDs in the entire galaxy had been removed.
Four days later someone found a new triple and told everyone about it and they all went there instead. But dear lord, if you suggested they go out and start probing rings themselves to try and find a mining site on their own...

The scale of the game is enormous but the ability to know your surroundings minuscule. Sure players can randomly jump around, spending HOURS finding pristine rings etc etc, but come on be serious. A game like this simply can't function without TONS of information-sharing between players.

Would suggest some type of probe you can launch that can go a system or two and at least give some info on what's around the player. Sans that, expect us all to hammer Inara and EDDB and Reddit like it's Google lol.

the fun thing is that honestly anywhere is good. You don't need that elusive triple-hotspot.

The other day I found a single-hotspot LTD with four cores withiin 20km of the hotspot centre. I can drop in there, blast the cores, and be out of there with 60t of diamonds super fast.
One system over, there's another one I know of with two cores of void opals and a grandidierite.
Grab a bunch of prospectors and even in a single hotspot mapping out a lucrative route isn't that hard.
So... yes, I am being serious. How do you think people find these spots in the first place?
How do you think the same person on reddit keeps producing amazing mining maps? It's not randomly jumping around, and calling it that is an insult to the skill and patience of the person that's doing it.

In my experience it is a random probing around. And that is the lesson from playing over 2 years of ED. Would you expect players to try the same thing over and over and expect a different outcome?

Ironically, as members of the Pilot's Federation we are supposed to specialize in gathering information to share with other pilots. But we have to use out-of-game tools to do that.
 
In Space Engineers we get players who want you to do everything for them. I don't mind trading a rare ore like uranium for something common like iron, but when people expect you to give them everything for free (including ships), that's where I draw the line.

On the other hand, having friends who can help you in a pinch is really nice. I think in-game helpfulness, assuming it's not extreme (says the guy who was given billions of credits for his fleet carrier) is not just okay, it really makes the game (ED and SE) special. Otherwise we should just disband the Fuel Rats and let people get along on their own.
 
I say be as helpful as possible, but perhaps give fair warning if some people think a certain activity is cheesy. But ED is a game where the in game tools and searching are not all that useful when compared to the 3rd party sites, so lots of questions are kind of a given. Never mind the bugs or broken mission types.
 
A helpful forum is a positive experience for anyone joining it. I think if you get too many answers then you narrow the game to those answers. The flip side is if you want the wider picture don't ask questions, go and try it out. With a game like ED some help is needed for most people. I think it would help if the game offered some hints. eg If you enter a system and something is recorded in the Codex it should prompt the player to go look.
