[art style/world building] is there a function to these buttons?

I was looking at some of the concept art of the game and found the early concept for the cockpit seat, as an early concept it has a central physical display that probably would have worked as the 3 separated holographic displays that we have now.

but the topic is not about it, but instead I'd like to ask about the buttons pressent at the chair, mostly this bear paw like keypad.

I already know that at the right we have switches that are using typically radio names shortened but this keypad on the left I've been always wondering if its some kind of control or maybe a biometric device? 🤔

Could these buttons be of use on VR?

The crotch monitor was in the game but unused until Horizons, where it became the role panel.

I assume the 'paw' control is something akin to the three seashells, arguably obsolete now we can get up from our seat.

FWIW, there is/was a company who produced a replica of the palm controller-thing in ED.

It was, basically, a bunch of push-buttons and a huge d-pad and, IIRC, it cost a stupid amount of money.
But, I guess if you've just got to have one...
