As part of beyond, please could we look at combat rank progression? I do not want it easier!

The thing is, I've been playing the game 3 years. I took 14 months off total in all those years, and I'm still only Master in combat (I'm almost dangerous to be exact).

Stop trading and start fighting! I hear you say. Well, I've been primarily a combat pilot all that time. So how is my combat rank so low? It's quite simple really, I get bored very quickly of popping small targets one after the other in combat zones and HAZreses, so that's never been my cup of tea.

I'm an assassin and proud. Call me an enforcer if you like. I take out terrorists and pirate lords, I am the most feared assassin in the Federation. Wanted targets have been known to high wake as soon as they see me in SC.

This means that if I spend an hour doing combat, I'll get maybe 4 kills, all corvettes, anacondas, cutters, etc. I'm proud of the fact that I can do these not just in any Imp Courier, but in one outfitted for racing, with lightweight weapons, D rated distro etc.

So after taking 12 minutes to kill a corvette in style, my facerolling, mouth breathing counterpart has popped 15 sideys in a comp nav with zero skill and effort in his corvette.

Now put in the mix that I like having a fighter, it's fun, more gameplay, more dynamic, but can't because he takes half my combat experience slowing me down even more.

So the result of the current implementation is that you've got me, a decent pilot, making high skill, high difficulty kills (comparatively), making little progress over years, and not being able to enjoy training and sharing camaraderie with my virtual buddy. The funniest part of all this is that I will reach explo AND trade rank before combat, despite those things representing MAYBE 10% of my time spent in game.

Please consider an algorithm for combat rank awards that takes into account the size and equipment discrepancy between player and NPC, as well as combat rank, and PLEASE, for the love of all that is good, stop penalising player XP for using a fighter. We already pay them enough.

When 2 combat pilots go out on CAP for 4 hours, they don't register 2 hours of flight experience each. I rest my case. Thanks!

Well your not going to like getting through Dangerous or deadly ranks.... no joke i have been dangerous rank for at least 4 months yet i am only just hitting 75%

I think most people hit the elite ranks for trader/explorer long before they will ever see master or dangerous ranks in combat. I did notice myself getting more % from doing assassination wing missions solo but dam those can take a while even in a fully kitted out Corvette it took me good part of 5-10mins just to kill the pirate lord thats after fly swatting his little wing friends.

In long run i have pretty much given up trying to get to elite rank in combat ill just do what i want have a bit of fun and in time it will get there i guess.

I can agree that fighter pilots should get a reduse on how much rank% they are taking off you since they are already taking a cut of yo money isnt that enough.

Its no fun being Elite. All the missions are just damned fiddly requiring massive ships.

Wish they would do something like they did for CQC where I could reset my Ranks (just my Ranks thanks, nothing else), for some piffling reward like 5% outfitting discount

For the first three quarters of your text, I was wondering if you had any point to make with this post, relating to your title...

So then, in the second to last paragraph, you finally came around :p

I agree with your suggestion there, irrespective of anything you wrote above it...

Right now, the only thing FD takes into account is your opponent's combat rating. If you kill a 'competent' Anaconda in your courier, as 'master', you won't get the slightest advancement for that kill.

Your buddy can sit afk in a tanked out Cutter with 1 ton of gold in the hold and let the turrets take down pirate after pirate, he'll get points for anything with a combat ranking higher than himself.

And the higher you get up the stupid ladder, the less targets will get you ANY advance, let alone the % shrinkage when you're at the second to last rank.

For me, I didn't give a crap about the ranks, until I found, that I can't unlock the Lori Jameson engineer, requiring combat rank "Dangerous"
So, suddenly, I have to gain combat ranks and so far, I haven't gotten more than 1% gain for any kill, meaning I'd have to kill a minimum of 200 ships with a higher rank than me, to unlock an engineer with a mod that I need for exploration...

Annoying to say the least. I get bored fast in combat zones and hazres - its ok for a little while, but you get all those targets of lower combat rank that give you nothing. FD must think we have our time just to be wasted away on meaningless grind gates...

If it became worth something to kill larger ships while using smaller ships, that would be an improvement.

The whole idea of combat rank is based upon grinding high-ranked small ships in some tank that can perma-hover at comp nav beacons. Its daft. The final stretch requires you to kill about 3000 or so high-ranked ships. If you 'just play the game' rather than 'grind at res/nav' you will indeed need to play for 1500+ hours for just the final rank. Sometimes you do a few assassinations, sometimes you do missions for a few hours without running into a single opponent. It is impossible to become Elite in any other way than grinding endlessly spawning ships through the res/nav mill for hours on end. Which is a shame.

I'm deadly, 78%. Been working through the final rank for over a year now. I hope to get there this year. Its silly.

I'm Master at about 70% and never grinded for combat rank. That said, it was easy to get master by collecting money in Hazres and assassination missions, but afterwards the 70% took months. I know I could elevate quicker by grinding Hazres or CNBs, but I don't want to begin with a over-repetitive playstyle. I'm not sure how this affects game-play at all: I do get plenty of higher ranked missions. Does it have drawbacks apart from Lori Jameson?

Wanna hear the punchline? To access Lori, you need to not only be dangerous in combat, but also elite in at least one discipline. Simply because she's in a permit lock system that unlocks when you hit elite in any discipline.

P. S. I like rambling, sorry. ;)

Nah, just the engineer (combined with a sense of completion), and of course for the engineer, as mentioned you gotta be elite to get into her system anyway.

Hehe I know you'll hate me for doing this ;) but I actually AGREE with you on this Aashenfox...I usually use my beloved fixed weapon Viper 3 for combat (so the NPCs are actually still a challenge) and seek out bigger/higher rank ships...Big 3 FDLs FAS etc...and I've wondered for ages why my combat Rank was so low ( c70% Master) and other people ( who I'm arroganrt enough to believe aren't significantly "better" than me) were sat cosy on Elite...getting even more ridiculous now I'm spending time after Thargoids!
(Same for me with trade...I hate rinse and repeat so my trade rank sucks too)
I've often though that the "gates" for ranks shouldn't be simply number of credit/number of kill thresholds...but include multiple KPIs to tick off (kill x in total, kill x big 3, perform x Assassination missions, kill x Thargoids, kill a certain number in CZs etc etc ) just examples not a genuine proposal...but make it so you have to have done a variety of things and a selection of more challenging things to progress...
I guess that's applicable to the other ranks too...is there anything more ridiculous than getting to Exploration Elite merely scanning well known WWs and ELWs in, or just outside the bubble?

Not at all mate, some of the most stimulating people on the forum for me, are those who disagree with me all the time. :)

It's always good to find common ground too. :)

Completely agree re: better metrics and KPIS.

I don't mind rambling, everybody does it occasionally - I just read what you said in light of your title saying "I don't want ranking easier", so I couldn't get what you were getting at for most of the post :)

Ah and yes, I got Elite for trading, since a) trading was hands down the *most* profitable thing to do in the game for quite a while after release, so I got up to Typhoon before I quit from boredom in 1.4. And b) this January, I saw by random chance a YouTube video about elite players making 100 million an hour with passenger runs. That actually got me to log into the game to see - and it got me the final trading rank, so I'm good on that requirement...

Couldn't you do CZ's in your fighter? Or a CZ where there is just one capital class battlecruiser on the opposing side to be more challenging. There's also the hunt pirates in supercruise missions, and the powerplay undermining grinding for merits..
