Asp Explorer build for exploration with SRV

Hi all,

I am looking to take passenger missions to the centre of the galaxy, I have just got Horizons so now i would like to incorporate an SRV into my build but I am finding the number of size 3 slots in the Asp Explorer mean I will have to compromise. Would i get away with going with no shield at all? My thinking is, I am so far outside the bubble that I am unlikely to run into hostiles, and I want to be able to fit an AFM and possibly a size 3 business class cabin too (i already have the size 6 business class cabin on the ship).

Any suggestions of tried and tested builds would be appreciated! :)

Thanks,
Papa.

shields do also help landing or when accidentally bumping into some terrain when flying on a planet. without shields your hull will get damaged when you're not super careful. i personally would highly suggest taking a shield with you.

just did a quick build for an ASP. i'm by no means an expert on outfitting. in fact i'm relatively new to all of this too but i'd go with something like this: https://eddp.co/u/ULDyk9zW

you got everything you need for exploring plus a decent size passenger cabin and a cargo rack for any demands your passengers might have. of course you can exchange the suite for economy or first class options. also in terms of weapon hardpoints. that is your choice. if you put some beefy stuff on there make sure to upgrade your power plant as well (if you're planning on combat it might be a good idea to up the distributor as well otherwise leave it at minimum)

many passengers dislike hulldamage, which is why, if you like to land, bring a shield. an afmu is less necessary, since you have all the stations on the route to jaques to repair in case.

a class 6 bussiness class cabin doesn't make sense - fit a class 6 first class and a class 5 first class - you'll have more missions to choose from, exploration missions cant be fitted into the same cabin, and don't come with more passengers than fit in a class 6 firstclass. only fill 1 of the class 5& class 6 cabin (obviously the smaller one) and use the other huge slot for your fuelscoop. also: fit a cargo rack for picking up missions with cargo rewards, which you later change to your dss.

if you go without an afmu, but with an srv, you can only fit 2 missions in an aspe, if you bring a dss ... which is debateable.

Thanks for the replies, I don't think I can fit 2 passenger cabins in coz I want to have the size 5 fuel scoop and there Is a size 6, size 5 and 3 size 3 slots in the asp ex. 1 other question, do I need a cargo rack for collecting materials off planets with the srv? Or is it like data where you can store limitless amounts of that material?

Some great notes in here, Papalazarou, I figured I might add a thought or two.

...The build that redone posted looked good. I would switch that out to a 5A Scoop though. There is still enough power with the 3A and it adds no extra weight. I flew to Colonia with a 3A and it was scooping that took the most time of anything... the 5 class is alot nicer.

...I would stick with the A rated powerplants, the heat dissipation being an important factor. I'm under the impression that you've not spent any time opening up engineers, or I'd mention doing some easy efficiency mod on a powerplant to improve that heat rating even further.

...the idea of sticking on a cargo rack to collect your missions and then switching that out to something you want before you leave is a good idea. Probably it's also something to consider that you can buy something and stick it into storage so you would be able to transport it to you if needed along the way. I'm not certain that the new stopover stations along the way to Colonia have outfitting at all, but I suspect they do, and ports near Colonia would. I'm not sure what this might be, but it adds a touch of flexibility for you.

...I flew out to Jaques without using a AFMU at all also. Probably being aware of what star types there are will be key on that, etc... but I didn't land anywhere along the way. I think a shield is important if that is going to be part of the adventure. And I think a Detailed Surface Scanner is nice to have for a trip like that. However you can probably switch out the SRV into the Class 2 spot and so open up a Class 3 for either the Surface Scanner for another Passenger module - if it turns out that it's worth another several million - I would probably take the passenger myself... lol

Good luck on your flight.. Cheers o7

eta: The Materials you'd be scooping up from being on the planets will all go into your materials inventory. You won't need cargo space for that. And there isn't much in the way of salvage out in the black which is very important right now that it would dictate having a cargo capacity along the way.

Hi Papalazarou1977! You sound like you're new to ED and exploration, so welcome!

I've put together a suggestion for an Asp build.
https://coriolis.edcd.io/outfit/asp...l----3dmk0k43v62i2f.AwRj4yvI.IwBj4tXAmEeHEQ==.

Main points to consider in an exploration ship.
A rated power plant. They are more heat efficient meaning you shouldn't overheat as much when fuel scooping.
D rated modules where you can for weight saving, which extends your jump range.
Fuel scoop should be the largest you can afford. I've put on a 6B scoop, but you can put on a 6A if you have lots of CR, or a 6C if you want to lower your ship cost. Remember that higher rating means faster scooping.
I included an AFMU because you're not a seasoned explorer. You can have a number of accidents that aren't fatal but impact on your ship systems. Having a small AFMU can repair basic damage to keep you running.
Detailed Surface Scanner and Advanced Discovery Scanner. Absolutely essential for any explorer! These find all the bodies in a system, and double the payout for any planetary scans you make.
There's an SRV and passenger cabin in there as well.

If you wonder why there's a mining laser included, read this amazing thread. You'll never go into deep space without a mining laser again. :)

Good luck!

Thank you for all your replies, Zenith I think I am going to go with your suggestions. Just need to sell my Cobra mk3 and DBS now coz I'm short of cash and really don't fancy bounty hunting in high res to get the credits, and I plan to spend the next couple of weeks out exploring and doing the passenger mission I'm going to take so I should have a good few million when I return. Thanks again

Papa.
