Assorted Q&A thread

As I haven't seen a thread for assorted questions and answers, I figured I'd create one. The point is to have a thread where we (hopefully) can get quick answers to small questions, which we don't necessarily think are worth making new separate threads about.

Here's a few questions that's been on my mind:

1) How viable is it to remain independent rather than committing to a faction? Are there any particular advantages to it, do you miss out on certain kinds of missions, and are there events where you must choose a side?

2) If you start out in Federal territory, what's the most efficient way to travel to Imperial or Alliance territories? I see them when I zoom all the way out on the galaxy map, but I haven't seen any particular routes to use yet.

3) I know of numerous places where I can sell black market goods, but I still haven't seen any opportunities to purchase them. How do I go about doing that?

Thanks for your time.

For 1 and 2 we don't really know yet but I suspect either will be just as viable and those systems are not actually available to us yet.

For 3, the simplest way would be to go to the Galaxy map and turn on the alternate map view that allows you to choose the goods you want to trade in and then the map above will show you where to buy and sell. Just filter out what you aren't interested in.

I created one a few month back and it died soon after, like that very day :)

3. Most black market goods are stolen cargo you find. I dont know if you can buy it.

1+2. Unconfirmed

Thanks for answering those questions. I have one more:

I'm currently located at Morgor, and I need to travel to Aulis. How do I go about doing that, considering that Aulis appears to be very isolated? I have trouble finding a 'connection point'.

That's alright, I've foreseen that this one shall be eternal. ;)

I may be wrong, but in some systems you will see items like personnel weapons for sale, but others won't list them. I believe that is because in the latter systems they are illegal, and therefore you sell them on the black market.

There are a lot of threads out there, so generally I (and I suspect others) scan the titles before deciding to go I to one. Therefore a thread which doesn't have a title about a particular subject will often get skipped, and "general questions" could be anything.

For example the only reason I bothered with this thread today is I was just wasting time, if I wasn't so bored I wouldn't even have looked inside it :(

nope, spot on. not everything is illegal everywhere so some cargo that is illegal and needs to be sold on the black market in one system will be available at the standard market in another.

stolen goods (scooped cargo) is always illegal though so watch out where you try and sell them.

as a guide these are the sort of things that can be illegal:

personal weapons
combat stabilisers
anything in the narcotics section of the market (tobacco/beer ect.)
performance enhancers

there may be others that i'm unaware of yet but you dont exactly find out something is illegal until you arrive at the system to sell it and find its on the black market.

you need a ship with a longer jump range, or to increase the range of the ship you have by reducing your cargo load or selling some of your hardpoints. fuel can play a role as well, too much on board will reduce your range but its a trick one as too little will do the same.

Q3: Also, slave trade is legal in the Empire, it is illegal in the Federation.

From Drew Wagar's "Elite: Reclamation" (p. 288 in the PDF version):
‘I do not approve,’ Luko said, growing serious. ‘Your Empire is oppressive. You have slavery and servitude. This is not right.’
‘Slavery is a safety net for society,’ Kahina replied, the answer coming easily to her. ‘It ensures nobody can starve or fall into poverty. What would you have? That or the squalor the poor live in inside the Federation after the corporations have sucked the life out of them? Our way is far better.’

Q4: Different ships have different jump ranges, from 6.5 for an empty Sidewinder (a full cargo or weapons will reduce that number) to 30.31 for a Type 6. The list is here: http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Ships
