Brown dwarfs are somewhat like planets, but are stars. They will look purple-ish when you go visit them, and not really glowing like you might expect from a star, but they are a star all the same (though borderline between gas giant and star.)
With the ADS, can check the system map. A plain white circle is likely to be uninteresting. Cloud formations may reveal terraformable planets. Yellow and red and black planets are often metal rich. Things with rings are usually worth scanning. The larger the gas giant, the more profitable it is to scan I think. I have heard mention that some can guess whether a gas giant harbours life or no by the patterns on it (ones with life are worth more) but I haven't figured that part out.
Also note if you lock on to an object from your system view panel on the left, it will show you what it is even if it hasn't been scanned directly - you'll see an icon for rocks if it's a belt, or a planet (or nothing) if it's a planet. So you can also tell that way if you are heading for something interesting or no!
The orbit lines is a good idea, I switched them off for beauty, but that is a great way to find which thing is which, ty!
