Newcomer / Intro At a Memorial: How do you "scan" it

If "scanning it" is the right word how do I do that. I went to a memorial and I am right in front of it. So space isn't an issue.
I"m guess names are read off somehow, i think? I mean it is a Listening Station.
Is there something I have to do to get this working.? I did open Left Panel and went to "Listening station" but is doesn't do anything.
Mind you this is my first day out in the open space so my knowledge of things is still quite small; This is the first place I wanted to visit and don't want to leave with getting it done
Thanks

"Listening station" or "listening post"? I've never heard of a "listening station".

A "Listening post" isn't a memorial. Most of them were put in place as clues to point people towards Generation Ships or other hand-crafted features.

The easiest way to find out "what you're supposed to do" at each station is to look it up on third party sites. The Cannon Research Group have a comprehensive database of all known listening posts.

These memorials are new in the game - no, I have no idea how they work specifically, either.
The usual ways of scanning something are:
  • with nav beacons, you just have to make sure that you have the actual physical satellite targeted ( instead of the supercruise marker), point the ship at it and be close enough
  • with other structures, same as above, plus hardpoints deployed, then use the ship's datalink scanner. You need to have mapped the datalink scanner to a firegroup (and of course have that firegroup selected)
