Atmospheric Worlds. A Start?

It's more due to the complete lack of focus. SC are trying to do everything at once, and adding more and more feature creep every time. It's a development nightmare.
In your opinion.
All I see is different teams working on different aspects of the game.. which is, in my experience, a sensible way to approach the development of a project of such scope and scale.

That would be extremely disappointing. I'd rather have all weapons disabled when below 100km than being able to fly only on small patches with a huge, beautiful world around me..

Lets try and keep Star Citizen out of it. I know I am guilty too of talking about it. But to be honest it isn't really relavant.

They are struggling because of terrible management and terrible Frankenstein engine that simply cant do this scale of game play. After closely watching SC development for more than a 2 years I`m confident Elite will have this type of planets before SC.

Agree, and now back on track.....

Forgot to write that this is what a small team can do, the planetary tech is great, we don't see any vegetation, however as a starting point it look pretty nice.

I agree with most of what you say, but

EDs generation is much harder on hardware than NMS.

ED also runs very well on my PS4 Slim. So do many very graphically-demanding games like Uncharted, HZD, GTA, etc. I'm fairly certain Frontier's new dinosaur game will also be made available for consoles, so I'm not just not buying that atmo planets are out of the reach of current hardware, especially with the guy who brought 3D graphics to 1980s 8-bit computers leading the charge.

But it would not fit into ED at all.

I disagree with the "at all", as I've encountered worlds in NMS that look very realistic, more realistic than the parks in ED's agricultural and "Disney World" stations. I'm sure this has to do with the NMS's RNG seed giving some planets just the right kind of foliage, color, lighting, terrain, etc. Point being, take NMS's engine and narrow down the parameters in to strip away the 'fantasy' aspects, and you'd get worlds that would come pretty close to 'fitting in' to ED's motif. And who's to say that plants don't use purple chlorophyl when lit by a blue/violet sun?

Most computers today can generate what is needed, that is not what is holding it back.

I would be happy with atmospheric desert planets as a start similar to Mars. Baby steps are better than no steps at all. At least we would be able to get used to re-entry effects and possibly sand storms to deal with during landing or just flying around sightseeing. If they can throw in other types of planets with vegetation or water worlds w/o creatures would be nice too.

I think it would be staged as well basic atmospherics to begin with, like mars of today. But I see no reason why earthlikes would cripple machines or look terrible. Seems an odd statement to make.
Alot to render, you can barely go to a high intensity cz where a cap ship is with out killing your frame rate, might not be an issue on higher speced rigs though

Hmmm, not sure what system you have but CZ are fine in my ageing system. Even Res site are okay whoch sre the worst due to all the CPU work that needs doing.

Possibly. I am just thinking realistically though. It maybe disappointing, but my point still stands. Why would your weapons disable when below 100km. They don't do that around planetary installations on non-atmospherics.

Anyway, what ever they do, when it comes it will be pretty interesting.

That's why you would buy the unarmed civilian shuttle to fly around the surface with, launched from your ships bay.....

Thought experiments about ships over civilian and military land installations are very interesting. However I don't think they will be that much different from current mechanism. You will have to state your business, destination, and without lingering on will have to land on specific platform or place. Anything else will end up with rockets sent your way really. Any unauthorized approach will be met with swift and merciful death. Ok, in real life no one really pulls stunds like people do in games, but essentially station is mini city. You can't linger much on in station.

However, more interesting question what to do on Earth or similar planets not over big urban territories. What about small settlements? Will they pack their own air defence? I believe they might.

So overall it is interesting but there are already mechanics in game to give partial answers how it could look like.

We likely won't be able to land in earth likes, it would kill most machine's or look absolutely terrible, it will most likely basic ones like some of the HMC or ammonia worlds and probably gas giants

Nonsense, STahh Citizen already has atmospheric looking planets. The terrain looks significantly more detailed than what's currently in ED. Frontier should use the same tech of Planet Coaster and Jurassic Park Evo.

Call Cosmo when this is actual planet, not obvious handcrafted strip of land and when SC has actual game loops.

Also this is clearly an atmos planet, which ED don't yet have.

While I 100% agree that it is possible. Putting a Star Citizen pic in of a redered hand crafted (not ingame) shot is not a good example. Star Citizen has nothing like this in it yet and could be another year before it is.

Cosmo have you watched the 3.0 livestream and presentation? It exists only as a fragment not connected to the game to show of, its scripted to be used only at this very one gamescom, there is no indication anything like that will land on our HD any time soon. Smoke and mirrors. Their engine cant handle this sort of scale at the moment. Please dont bring SC "planetary tech" as a example of existing game play as it exists only as a gamescom presentation.

Can we start calling it "Star Lie" or something ever so witty like that now?
