Auto-block option against CMDR's with Notoriety

Disclaimer: I usually play in Solo and have never blocked anyone, so my understanding of the process is limited. But I get that some people want to play in Open for the "camaraderie" or whatever, without necessarily volunteering to get blown up by gankers at CG's for the lulz (while others enjoy the challenge of that).

So here's a suggestion: an optional setting for the Block function. If another player in your instance gains Notoriety, or you are about to be instanced with a player who has Notoriety, that player is automatically added to your blocklist with a temporary block that expires 48 hours later.

Any of the following conditions prevent the block from being applied:

1. The other player is a friend, a member of your squadron, or a wingmate.
2. You have "Report Crimes" turned off.
3. You have Notoriety yourself.
4. Both you and the other player are pledged to any PowerPlay Power (so you can't autoblock either PP allies or PP enemies).

Even if all potential victims selected this option, it wouldn't stop an initially non-notorious CMDR blowing someone up, or continuing to blow up others who were instanced with him when he opened fire. But any incoming players after that (with this option selected) would be protected, the ganker would automatically be autoblocked by those players due to his Notoriety. He wouldn't even be able to go elsewhere to find victims, as he'd be autoblocked wherever he goes. Meanwhile "lawful" vigilantes would not have this option selected, and could hunt him down.

Because the blocking would be automatic, it would be less hassle to use. And because all the autoblocks are only temporary, there would be no lasting effect on instancing. It only applies to opponents who are in your area over that 2-day period. Of course you still have the option of permablocking a specific player if you wish to do so - but as there wuld be a reduced need for this, blocklists are likely to shrink.

So why suggest this? Suggesting solutions to problems you don't have ...

Others do, though. And we've had an influx of new players who have been slaughtered in large numbers, apparently (maybe this mode should be set as default?)

You gain notoriety from killing NPCs too- so BGS people will get blocked.

Good point, perhaps it should work only against player-killers. Or perhaps not, a person who kills a non-wanted NPC (outside CZ's and PowerPlay) is still a "murderer", and some might prefer to temporarily autoblock "murderers" as a precaution!

The other issue is more fundamental- its not against any game rule to kill someone else. By doing this you upend that- although it takes some research PGs etc ED already has modes that help. Plus, you can block anyone you see now anyway.

True. But it also isn't against any game rule to block someone, for any reason or no reason. It's not about "punishing rulebreakers", it's about giving players more control over who they meet.

I agree with this part. As in, applying it to the current implementation of blocking, left otherwise unchanged.

Its not against the rules, but it has to be an informed choice based on experience rather than filters, at least IMO. Its the act of killing you that needs to precipitate action, not because player x did something to player y and totally unrelated to you.
