Autocannons as a replacement for Class 3-4 multicannons

Obviously i dont want to introduce a G.O.D.-cannon/Iwin-Launcher. i want it to be balanced, useful, fun to use and with a unique feel.

Ihave been thinking about this proposal a long time before i posted it, and i really believe it would be good for ED.

Sandro (dev) stated some interest some time ago, but as usual no promises were made. However, im curious about what has been decided.
 
Apparently a loot system is being looked at, it's on the radar though we don't know if in active development yet. it's needed not just for weapon balance and variety, but as a reward incentive on the mission system, tied into Powers and faction rewards, tied into potential housing or ship exterior customization, etc. It's sort of a lynchpin that's needed to enable the game to go in a number of different directions. I hope we start hearing about this soon.

I just hope that they include "loot drops" from downed enemies in this, and that the loot drop itself is generally better than what can be purchased from stations. Borderlands had the vending machines, but what dropped from NPC's was always better, and the vending machines were really a "sell for credits" bit, so that could then open up an all new "weapons trader" career. i'd rather this stuff went into the cargo holds (and we had to then choose what to keep, what to jettison), rather than aimlessly and frustratingly fly around stations hoping for the right class 3 gimballed cannon to be in stock, as that's a massively dull, creditless time sink, for me at least.

Back to the point of the thread, any additional weapons variety at the medium and high end is welcome. Sensible weapons upgrades seem to vanish at the 2 mil mark, as anything above that seems to be turreted weapons, or a fixed plasma accelerator, and gimballed options just disappear.

I love the idea. Something like a bofers would really fill a void in the class 3/4 slots that I'm sad to report that I find so boring right now.

A related idea that the multi-barreled suggestions made me think of is: wouldn't it be nice if we could add a trigger delay into our fire groups to facilitate offset firing when we wanted it?

I think we are going to be getting ammo for all the weapons even energy weapons. In the game files there is a section with bunch of different ammos for even beamed weapons.

Yeah, this could just as easily indicate a design direction that was tried but never taken, or even some other feature entirely that simply used the idea of tracking shots fired, or ammo types, etc.
 
hell of a necro but I have to ask since its been brought up

are the weapons still being looked into or has the idea been scrapped? From the 3 dev posts they were being looked into but that was a few months ago obviously.
 
Canons at 5* damage do not even do as much as multi-canon at 2* damage. It is therefore broke! Then you won't need bigger if it is fixed.

Oh wow, so it does a lot of damage when it hits? Does that matter when you can only reliably hit stuff from close range?
That's not fun. That doesn't even need skill.

Please FDev, make a C4 rapid-fire cannon like the OP suggests a reality. Autocannon/Multicannon.
The C2 Multicannons are fun to use. Even if you have to nerf the damage or magazine reload to balance it I'd much prefer a weapon that's fun, or at least satisfying to use.
 
The absence of multicanons beyond Medium hardpoints was a disheartening discovery for me. This talk of auto-canons to correct this pleases me.
I personally don't care too much for damage and rate of fire figures. I just hope that in the lovely scenario where such weapons are implemented that they have good ammo capacity.
