Newcomer / Intro Autodock music

Why do people find it so hard to dock manually? i`m just a noob, but i love docking by hand. It`s not hard either. Perhaps it`s because i`m used to making far harder landings in realistic flight sims. That`s the only reason I can put to it.

For me the docking computer is a godsend. Try manually docking with peripheral neuropathy, fine motor tremors, and nerve dammage to your hands - you learn to like the DC REALLY QUICK when landing under those circumstances.

A docking computer is nice. I can go downstairs and grab a drink or a snack. I can land any ship I own manually, the "your not good pilot if you use the Docking computer" is a lot bull. Just like it having to take up a slot is a load of bull.

I'm warning you now!
You can sit at your computer and watch the docking computer happily complete flawless docks.......it is exactly when you decide to grab a snack that it glitches and decides to hang you up in the toast rack.....

They had a bug a while back (the NPCs couldn't land either and kept getting destroyed which was quite funny) - and so I removed all DCs from all my ships.....The sudden acquisition of additional module space and options it gave me has meant I haven't returned DCs to any of them.
Just personal choice - couldn't care less whether others fit them or not..

Just warning you that they aren't infallible!

I like having a decent shield so can just slam down into the landing pad :)

I do realize that the DC isn't infallible. During the bug that you mention I was in a smaller ship so would just let it take me to a few meters above the pad and would then turn it off and do my best to use thruster inputs to land. Still lost a few ships, but managed enough landings to keep going until the problem was sussed.

you gotta do what you gotta do:)

Is it possible to turn off the symphony that plays while auto docking?
It's a great classic, but I'm so tired of hearing it over and over.

A docking computer is a waste of a perfectly good slot.
Get rid of it asap and put something useful in there.

I personally feel that FD should implement a software upgrade system that does not use hardware slots.
It would be great to be able to buy and install all kinds of software upgrades in my ship.
Some might even be tweaked by engineers or some software might be illegal.
There is a whole world of cool possibilities here.

Pretty obvious isn't it? Big, rotating wheel space station, "The Blue Danube" playing in the background, you admire the scenery as your ship docks for you. Welcome to "2001: A Space Odyssey". Anyone else notice how some of the games musical score sounds suspiciously like some Star Trek (and Star Wars) musical themes?

I used to engage the automatic-docking computer from way outside the station and it would occasionally (10% of the time) boost and lawn-dart my ship into the side of the station while happily churning out "The Blue Danube". The docking computer helped me get good at hitting the slot with the Annie and so I began to chop the throttle and engage the ADC as I went thru the mail-slot. I found, that when the ADC is activated inside the station it does not play the music. There is still the little strangled "music ending" sound when the ship hits the pad but no "Blue Danube".

I also found that after a while the ADC gets in the way, unexpectedly taking control when I chop the throttle to zero because I forgot I had the ADC turned on and yes, I did turn it off all the time especially approaching terrestrial ports where you will be mocked by flight control if you use an ADC. So I would forget to turn it off, then go to a space-station and forget to turn it back on, etc., etc. Once you "get gud" at docking, the ADC just gets in the way. I replaced it with an advanced discovery scanner, which actually earns money.

Half the reason I use the docking computer is because of the 2001 connection. Obviously that is where the rotating square slot station idea came from, I laugh at the developers acknowledging their source so blatantly with the song.

Maybe, if we ever get the ability to walk out of our ships the customs offices in the stations & cities will have "Federation", "Empire" and "Alliance" (and whoever that new power is) lines.

Just in case you don't know the music was used in the original (1984) Elite so it isn't going to change

I have absolutely zero recollection of any music whatsoever on the BBC B version of Elite in the early 80's......the wireframes version I mean where it was a serious challenge to dock (largely because joysticks were on/off micro-switches)

Apparently it was introduced on the C64 in 1985, so not on the original '84 version on the Beeb.
