AX Restoration tactics

Yeah, it's interesting why the Banshee sometimes spawns and sometimes doesn't - but at least it doesn't spawn again when you destroy it.
Since Banshee reminds me a lot of Goliath, we can then ask - is Goliath always present in human military settlements or not?
I don't think I've seen it in small size settlements, but I'm not sure.
And interestingly, your pay for a successful action does not depend on the Banshee, so you can earn more money for a mission where there is no Banshee at all!
I had the same thought - about Banshee, Goliaths and military layouts, but I can't remember which ones have them. I'm absolutely sure that it's present on the tiny layout but also I think that not all mil.layouts have them

I don't mind Banshees to be honest. Just make a beeline to the power building. Once you have invincible cover, you can dictate the engagement. I just feel the never-ending Revenant reinforcements are a bit cheesy.

but aren't those Revenants just biotech Drones?
Semi-sentient constructs as far as I can tell. Definitely not the smartest bunch though, since they need to be shot at, walked in front of, or for big momma(the Banshee) to spot a pesky human from afar to know a target is there.

But I’m not interested in continuing armed aggression against the Thargoids, even in the Bubble*. Made it a personal goal/challenge to do these without shooting(killing) the Revenants.

… I might still have shot them in the early war months, but that time’s passed. I still continue to resist them… in my way. Evacs, occasional Titan rescues(waiting for the pod that contains not-quite-safe/human), this stuff… you name it.

*In game, I have only fought them there. RP… that’s a whole different story, one that I expect will also stay entirely non-canon - had fun writing it nonetheless. But hey, I predicted the ‘There will be hybrid humans’ plot before it happened(just kidding, it was probably evident to most from when the Thargoids began picking pods up after returning… right?).

(Uncertain) Banshees only appear to spawn at every other settlement? That, or it depends on the layout, but I’m not sure why one would be guarding a tiny settlement, yet not be present at one with ‘small’ size before that. First one I visited had a Banshee(in the most painful configuration to get one), second site did not, and the third, tiny settlement, then had one again.
My experience is that it is entirely down to settlement layout. I'm doing AX restoration missions in HIP 21112 where there are only 3 military settlements. The largest is the walled type with 2x small landing pads within the walls. There is ALWAYS a Banshee here. Next is the open settlement with the power building in the middle of it. Again there is ALWAYS a Banshee here. Third is the walled settlement with a small landing pad within the walls and the large habitat and storage buildings (the layout that all settlements used during the Alpha). There has NEVER been a Banshee here.

Not sure if it's been mentioned but the Revenants are now much more vulnerable to plasma sniper rifle fire and they are always destroyed in one shot (albeit with a grade 5 weapon) regardless of where you hit them. Makes them easy to pick off while also trying to destroy the Banshee.

I also solved the missions from 70 Tauri for HIP 21112, and I noticed that very rarely only one mission appears for HIP 20679, which does not seem logical to me because HIP 20679 is much closer to 70 Tauri, has more military settlements and is still at the same time the counterstrike system. So it is not clear why there are not many missions for that system.

By the way, I noticed (maybe it was known from before, idk) that you can destroy the mines launched by Banshee and Revenants in the air, by shooting from the surge repeater. They don't explode in the air, they just disappear.

Yeah, I've never been a fan of the "zombie horde" mechanics. I completed one mission using stealth after getting killed by the horde, it was enough to say "I did it"... No need to rinse and repeat.

Usually, I don't even try to be stealthy. I'm not a stealth boy (tm). 😜

I just run straight to the power station, the Revenants never managed to kill me in time. I turn on the power and by then, all those angry Revenants have gathered outside the door. Perfect targets for my Executioner to one-shot them (and Banshee if present). When they're gone, I go to the command building for loot. The newly arrived Revenants didn't get the sitrep, so they just patrol the area as usual. I can then check out other buildings, or start my departure. No stealth there either. The Revenants can hit glancing shots even out to ~1km I think, but they don't do too much damage.

Funny anecdote: I once poorly hid my Scorpion about 0.8kms away from the station. While I was doing my thing, all Revenants started shooting my SRV. They did so for about 15 minutes, didn't even take a break as the constant "SRV under attack" messages proved. When I returned to my SRV (Revenants still mad and shooting) its shields and hull were at 100%/100%. Shield regen was stronger than the Thargoid light show at that distance. 😅

I can't seem to get any AX reactivation missions that aren't bugged at the moment, either I turn up to the mission target and the settlement is already powered up and staffed as normal, or I get to one as I did today which is powered down but no Thargoid presence. In both situations, the mission doesn't seem to progress once I arrive at the site :( Are they bugged at the moment or are their specific criteria I need to be aware of so I can pick a mission that actually works?

You’re looking at the ‘standard’ ones in post-Thargoid recovery systems - best bet is to just go to ones in their first week of the state(and/or check system map if it shows the place as active).

Frontier has repeatedly attempted to fix that issue… to no avail.

And those will never have Thargoids. Only those in Thargoid-controlled space do, and you have to pick them up in the alert or invasion state. Why both are labelled as ‘AX reactivation’ when only one actually features Thargoids, dunno.

Ah I vaguely remember something about that from a previous post somewhere, thanks :) Shame it can't seem to be fixed properly but I'll go check the other two system states.

There are only alerts currently. And the only two that remain which you can plausibly pick up the reactivations in controlled space for, before they complete, are Scythia and HIP 20616. With respective distances of 270k and (almost) 176k ls to their station(s).

Luggerates was an option this week, but is sitting at 96%, and Frontier decided that ending all mission offers and activities at the states when a system reaches completion had to be done to make players move around more. (I don’t know if it really does. Don’t think so.)

Good to know thank you :) I'll try earlier in the next cycle for them, looks like I'll be investigating Spires this afternoon instead once I've done my hauling quota

The AX reactivations have certainly become more risky since U17.
I might need to sort out a list of which sites give which variety of opposition.
It’d be nice to know, yeah. I’m kind of feeling like I want to avoid the Banshees because it’s a bit too hard to try the sneaky route with them. One of those settlements per run would be enough.

And it’s still time to play popularity contest for this issue here…

Does the shield projector last long enough to get in the door?
Kinda. I used one once to get through a door while the Banshee was angry at me, plus 3/4 Revenants. The projector dropped as I was charging the door to the command center(closest option in the settlement that I was at then), and took a few scratches to the suit. (Not helped by the cutting on one side going super slow.)

Not an approach that might work if you have 11 Revenants with clear line of sight to you plus the Banshee, because the game spawned a scout to drop some by, when you simply didn’t cross the 500m spawn threshold for the initial Revenant presence.

Would be nice if the point defense did that.

You can shoot them on foot too (to stop them exploding/inflicting damage) but the collision detection is very dodgy and often doesn't work, so they explode in your face anyway.
