AX Taipan

The NPC would burn through the missiles when the hearts were active unless you shut off the hardpoints or tell them to stand down. And if you tried to go head to head with a Cyclops in a fighter and get aggro, then the new aiming ability of the Thargoid would rip your little ship to shreds in short order. If you want to test what would happen just send your current SLF against a Thargoid and sit back and watch how long it lasts.

No. The only way this little fighter will be useful with NPCs at the helm is if you are sharing aggro and it can subtarget. The latter will never happen though because scrub combat pilots would call foul if they ever encountered decent AI.

I've noticed the NPC Crew fires off chaff constantly until it runs out, even if you're not around any other ships with it deployed. While they aim well with fixed weapons with a velocity when ranked up, they still aren't the sharpest tools in the shed. Their AI logic seems to be pretty basic when it comes to consumables, and shooting at targets.

That said, my crew does remarkably well with the fixed MC Condor, so the AX Taipan might not be bad beyond slow and pitching (40) about the same as my Anaconda (38).

An SLF with flak cannons would be interesting, though I expect it'd rack up oodles of fines and whatnot in an RES or CZ.

What difference does it make when it's available? We need some new Thargoid content. Bring on the Klaxians.

Not sure why you'd bring an AX Taipan to a RES or a CZ? This is a specialized vs-Thargoid ship.

In anycase the AX multicannon is only useful for SUBTARGETTED thargoid modules (aka Hearts), and cannot damage hull. So it doesn't matter how well they aim. NPCs are currently barred from sub-targeting modules because people whined that the NPCs stole their lunch money after 2.1, so now we have neutered AI, and hence AX Taipans that may end up being useless for vs Thargoid fights (outside of multicrew)

Sounds like they're trying to give multicrew some purpose...

What would be cool is boarding a megaship, you could find a new option "support megaship security" where you can enroll for local security and access SLFs from there. Much like a local CQC area.

I assume if such feature would appear it won't anytime soon and would be linked to the upcoming Squadrons feature...

Don't think your wrong about the NPC burning through missiles, but I think JManis has a viable strategy here, I've been fighting thargoids off and on since the start and while it varies I still haven't found them much of a threat to any craft I fly - problem is running out of ammo solo. I'll be trying the new fighter out on my gunship when it's available and see how it goes, while having a version that's good against the thargon swarm would make a good addition as well, I still find I can pretty much ignore them, they tend to wander off and get lost if you drag the parent ship away from the original combat site.
While I've stated elsewhere that I believe a lot of what FDev do including the Thargoids is aimed at trying to make us "group up" and play in wings or mutlicrew - this actually feels more like a widening of options, and as such sounds good to me.

I'm anticipating these fighters being a valuable addition to my anti-thargoid kit. Sure...they may not be able to target the hearts (we won't know for sure till we get them, as the AI to do that did exist once), but I'm sure they'll be more useful than a fighter that can't do any damage to anything Thargoid.

Plus unlike the turretted versions of the weapons which are useless solo, this will give me the option of inviting a friend to multicrew effectively without having to change my kit.

I wonder where these will be sold when they finally flick the switch?

Ive been doing some looking.. even though EDDB fails to say it, there is a Fighter Bay Compliment for sale at Donar's Oak. Size 5 an 6.. possibly 7.
Blackmount sells the Condor when a bay is already fitted.
All Aegis ports should sell Taipans.. and there SHOULD be an addition to every outfitter
for the new AX1 Taipan - at least within 200 ly of Merope.
Will be filling in the blanks tonite on where to buy these little dudes.. and weather or not ammo depletes, or is renewed on ship dock.

I'm sitting in Alcazar's hope, which sells all 5 Taipan class fighters already. No sign yet here.

Experience shows that once the devs flick the switch it takes around 90 minutes for them to be available. Or at least that's how long after the Aegis CG's each CG reward took to be on sale. Saw a dev post after the first one finished talking about the switch having been flicked or somesuch.

Still no changes..

2hrs later. Same place.
First to post screens wins! yay!

Ugh, doing a solo video to demonstrate the fighter is going to be tough.

Oh well, looking forward to it.

Looking forward to a video of you frantically digging through the crew menus to transfer to the SLF... just in time to see it blown up and losing 5% mothership hull during the loading screen. :D But seriously, I agree it will be interesting. Not sure if it will ultimately end up being a benefit or just a novel way to Kamikaze a Cyclops in your SLF.

My hope is that they'll put Thargoid hunting in the Multicrew activities list and give decent rewards for each takedown.

Might be worth checking the Military Economy Star ports Aegis set up last week Asterope and ... umm... that other one

Checked Asterope an hour ago for no result.

However it's important to note that no spaceport has sold any anti-Thargoid gear yet. Only surface ports. Not sure they'll break that for the fighters.
