Axis mapping on Hotas and rudders

I haven't played the game yet so sorry if this is a silly question...

Is it possible to map the twist axis of a joystick to a different function than the actual rudder rotation on the pedals ?

Most games I've tried detect the rudder and the jostick twist as the same input, therefore they have to command the same movement axis. The only game where I could map them to different controls was SW Battlefront 2.

My goal would be to map my joystick twist axis to yaw, the main rudder axis to left/right strafe, and the two independant pedals axes to up and down. This way the stick would control the direction the ship faces, while the three axes of my rudder pedals would allow me to move the ship up, down and sideways without changing its orientation.

You should be able to map the lateral thrusters to your rudder axis no problem. However the vertical thrust is also a singe axis so you wouldn't be able to assign the two separate axis of the pedals for this. One of the pedals yes, but would have difficulty holding it central for zero thrust.

Thanks for the quick reply, that's disappointing though... There should be, like in certain sims, the option to chose, like having three different imputs : vertical axis (up and down), up axis, and left axis.

However, I suppose you can map up and down thrusters to actual keys on the keyboard. As a workaround, assuming some background running software that could this exists, it could be possible to have the two pedals axes detected as key presses. You would simply lose the sensitivity of the pedals...

Yes keys instead of axis can be mapped to the thrusters. So up down left right is 4 keys. Depending on your HOTAS system you may be able to make it work as you describe. I am sure it can be done using TARGET with the Warthog. An axis value can give a key press. Otherwise there are third party utilities that have been mentioned in these forums that will do that sort of thing. Someone else might chip in with a few names.

Now that I think of it, I'm pretty sure the utility for my Saitek Pro Flight pedals allows to map any axis to a keystroke. I'll probably go this way then, hopefully the devs will implement a more flexible way to map axes when the game releases.

Sorry for the double post, but I can't seem to delete my previous message and I think I've just found a workaround solution for my problem. It could have other uses as well for anyone using game controllers :

This little program should give me control over all the axes of my controllers, allowing me to merge both toe pedals into a single axis. I'm not at home right now but I'll try it and edit this post if I get it to work!
