Babylon 5 coming to Elite Dangerous for Xmas

I’m attached to a FB group and there are a number of Venerated Commanders from the Pilots Federation there and a naturally us Gropos (ground pounders)

babylon5 has been a cornerstone in my life, like most of the sci-fi I love (Star Wars, all the treks).
But B5 was just some amazing story telling with multiple arcs in motion at any one time, some slow burners some that become the main narrative. If you thought Marvel was good at setting up other stories / characters in up and coming movies.
B5 trumps it all.
It was cheap & nasty and unloved by its parent company. They were left unsupervised, From experimental CGI, experimental camerawork and some weird actor/acting choices - they pulled of 5 years of amazing TV that slid from Generic Star-trek formulae to Epic Lord or the Rings stuff.

But that loss of love from the parent company makes it impossible to make decent HD transfers, re-render the CGI for 16:9 and redo all the composite shots.
The dvd/digital stream takes the 4:3 footage and crops it On all the cgi and composite shots.
they could have just upscaled the original 4:3 footage that aired, but sadly not.

Babylon5 Was the last of the Babylon stations, there would never be another.
She taught us to make our own futures otherwise others will make it for us.

I find it hard to believe anyone who is into Elite hasn't watched B5 :) If that's you, watch all of it, asap. You won't regret it. Unique worldbuilding, long playing arcs that really pay off, and some great sci fi ideas mixed in. Season one has a bad rep but it's still great, but 2-4 are really extraordinary. 5 is also fantastic but on a slightly lower level. However, the finale is one to remember forever. There's never been anything like it.

Season 1 bears re-watching once you've watched the whole thing. There are a lot of things dropped into the early episodes that only make sense later on.

Yes, it's aged (some awful 90's US TV hair, and the once ground breaking CGI no longer wows like it does) but it's stupendously ambitious in scope.

Despite my love for SciFi, I never could watch that show. The acting was stiff, the story telling was lost, and the CGI was not an improvement on the puppetry used by older shows in the genre.

I couldn't help myself making comparisons to Babylon 5 while flying around the Golconda. Not least the 'excellent' TV CG from the nineties against the real time 4k renders I was looking at. I believe the pilot episode's graphics were generated from 20 daisy chained Amigas. They really were good at banging those rocks together. Talk about optimised graphics... let's not get tearful about wireframes... It's not being old you know, it's just depth of character.

Yeah, there are a couple of Season1 "one-off" episodes are, that actually turns out to be foreshadowing of major arcs.

People of a similar profession who develop a drug addiction to stimulants as they wanted to do more.
Someone who delivers "the eye" in season1, is someone "who finds things", which of course comes back in a later season. We are introduced to a character who explains their job in the exact same way, they "find things". That character takes up a central role within the ranks in the main ensemble cast.
So much foreshadowing and easter eggs, and subtle nods all over the shop.

Truth. Season 1 is getting you introduced to the world and seems to be slow and of little meaning. Then it all pays off for 3 more seasons. Would have been 4 but JMS had to hurry up with the story not knowing he would get a 5th season. Then they gave him a 5th and so he made some good stories, but the arc was over already. So we ended up with an epilogue season with more questions.

I keep seeing an NPC pirate called Morden in the noob-zone - don't remember seeing him anywhere else (but I don't do RES very often).
There's several B5 names in the NPC name generator mix. I've seen Morden, Londo (and Lando), and Vir for sure.

I will also observe that an Imperial Clipper with the Iridescent Dawn skin is a fair likeness to a White Star. While it's a good deal smaller than the "real" deal, I'd wager the pilots' beds are more comfortable.
