Bandwidth usage?

300 kb/s for an hour/day play = 30 GB / month.

Thats fairly massive bandwidth just for game comms, which pretty much rules out most, if not all, bandwidth restricted internet connections.

Should be listed as part of the minimum specs for playing the online version of the game else those with restricted bandwidth internet connections will get burnt. Especially if they use plans which charge a fee for every MB you exceed your monthly bandwidth by.
Mine is under 200 Bytes/Second NOT Kb/s

With a full instance it would be like:
64 byte per package x 30 fps x 32 players x 60 seconds x 60 minutes x 30 days = 6 gb per month
But I expect it to be a fraction of that most of the time (only 2-5 players per instance)

I'm pretty sure the "64 byte per package x 30 fps x 32 players ... " part of your equation is a bit on the iffy side , but I agree that bandwidth usage will vary hugely when different numbers of players (including NPCs) will be present. There'll be tiny amounts of network usage when docked (until we can do more than just trade/upgrade ship i.e. get out and about) and minimal amount when cruising around between systems.

I may be having a moment of madness, but I seem to recall that one PC in the instance would somehow be nominated to do the heavy lifting. Assuming I am right (I may well be making this up) then it would seem reasonable that the PC in question would have significantly higher network throughput.

So the measures recorded may or may not be a good reflection of the network throughput in general.

Our fellow forumian, alpha tester and network protocol designer Bodshal said that it was around 300 kb/s (500 kb/s when meeting players) when other players around (please correct me if I remember it wrong :)). Bear in mind that you won't meet/see people all the time, so for the rest of the game my guess amount of data will be quite minimal.

300-500kb/s is a pretty massive amount of bandwidth for comms, can we some conformation of that by running a bandwidth meter when playing?.

It seems I got units wrong :) I will test myself in the evening to clarify my statement.

Any news on that test, yet?

This post by "natte hond", shares a video that shows how to check in-game network usage.

However, you cannot differentiate between download and upload usage.
Measuring the upload, not the total, but how the upload is used during gameplay, could also be useful, considering that the upload bandwidth is usually much less.
For example my connection gives ~12Mbps download and ~0.7Mbps upload. :(

If "The Wife" is also VoIPing at the time you decide to play, then you may highly risk your WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor). ;)
