Banished - new indie city sim game worth a look

A city build sim. It's quite lite, but it's feature complete and very pleasant to chill out to with a beer and some of your favourite tunes. Start with very little, build up with houses, food, wood, stone, iron. Grow and expand your town while balancing the harsh winter conditions, control your population to work in teh mines, quarries, farms, etc... it's very pleasing to be in and watch the time tick by in 10x (stardreamer-esque) mode.

It's not going to tax you, and I think the longevity of the game is in question given there are so few parts, but it's an awesome example of what happens when you release a simple idea with near flawless execution.

there were around 17k people playing it today - each paid $20 USD or more (tips were optional via the HumbleBundle payment widgit) and the number who have purchased it is higher still. So yeah, i guess this guy's bank manager is happy right now :)

Oh, yeah, it was made by one guy. And his brother helped out with some music. But one guy wrote all the AI, did gfx, sfx, UI and all the stuff.... most impressive. And his blog is a good read too if you're interested in the background of games dev.

Having had a brief glance, it kinda reminds me of populous on the Amiga.

Back in the day we would take our computers around to friends houses and do that stuff full on via the old serial cable.

The vid looks sort of charming.

That's nice and relaxing.

Its exactly what my 'grew up on a farm, now I work in tech' needs.

Its very earthy.
It wouldn't be unlike playing a forest screen saver.
