Maybe if they do influence people on some level it would explain the crashed ships with UA's and Barnacles. Maybe the UA slowly makes the pilot go crazy and tries to make them crash into a planet so the Barnacle can grow from the UA. The barnacle itself might be a terraforming machine that burrows into the ground and harvests resources and then eventually spreads creep like the Zerg in Starcraft.
