Bartender trading - am I a moron, or is this a bug?

Before I raise another support ticket, I figured I'd ask here in case I'm simply being an idiot and failing to understand fundamentally basic about the game which is immediately obvious to all other players.

I want to trade with the bartender to get some more Graphene. My Assets inventory is full, and I've heard that the bartender offers a conveniently ruinous rate of exchange, so I figured it'd be an opportunity to offload some Assets I don't want for some that I do want and free up some inventory space for more grinding.

Only I can't. When I try to trade with the bartender the bartender sniffily refuses to trade, claiming that "your traded item value exceeds the number of assets your inventory can receive".

Now, it's entirely possible I'm misunderstanding how bartender trading works. From the trading screen it appears that:
  • The bartender will offer X units of exchange when taking your assets (e.g. paying you 13 units for your Graphene)
  • The bartender will ask for Y units of exchange when giving you assets (e.g. selling Graphene to you for 23 units)
  • If I want a single unit of Graphene from the bartender, I need to offer the bartender enough other chemicals whose total selling value adds up to at least 23 exchange units.

Unless I've got it completely wrong, in this screenshot the bartender ought to be offering me 27 units of Graphene (623 / 23, rounded down) in return for 174 other chemicals (and freeing up 147 inventory slots along the way). But the bartender isn't.

So... have I misunderstood bartender trading, or is this yet another grimly inevitable, depressingly predictable bug where the "do you have enough room in your inventory?" calculation is performed without taking into account the intended trade which would free up space in your inventory?

You have no space in your inventory.. Even tho you are trading 10 items for 1; the system overlooks this mathematical possibility and concludes your inventory is full. Sell a couple of items first. Then do the trade again.

Yes, this could improve.

I'd call this a flow design flaw. It should account for loss in the barter.

It currently means you have to sell one item (losing its barter value) and then slowly barter for 1, then more.

Clunky.

So it is a bug after all. "I'll give you ten of this thing for one of that other thing." "But you have no space in your pack!" "But I will have once I give you these ten things..."

I'll go vote on that bug. Who knows? It might get fixed.

Your assest inventory is nearly full, but it doesn't tell you this in any of the bartender's screens - in fact you can only figure this out on your ship as far as I can tell.

Say I have 995 assets, and I want to trade away 20 assets for 10 new ones.

I can't do this, because the game will count in the 10 new assets as I'm preparing the trade, one by one until maxing out at 1000: but it won't count out the 20 I'm trading away until the end, when the transaction is complete.

I need to trade for 5 new assets at most, while losing 10. New total is 990. Next trade I can have 10 new assets at most.

it is not a bug. It is a oversight.

Btw Enough items have no trading value like hush, Push, Insight etc. just sell some of those

Not for Assets. no, but it will help free up some Goods space (which is also full) so I can take - and abandon - some "restore power" missions so I can get some Power Regulators.
Sure. I didn't see you ask about freeing up good space, just raising an issue about trading assets. So wanted this to be clear that they're not related so won't help others reading this thread who also have the same issue you raised.

If not specified, it might mislead people.

Issue tracker says it is fixed, but I am having this problem today. With a fleet carrier bartender. My assets were full, but it wouldn't let me buy data. Very obnoxious.
