Basic question about ED is it MMO or Co-op single player.

I categorize Elite Dangerous as single payer co-op game. It's not a MMO (no matter how hard you want to call it that way) due to lack of MMO mechanics.

Definition - Wiki :
"A massively multiplayer online game (MMOG, or more commonly, MMO) is an online game which is capable of supporting large numbers of players, typically from hundreds to thousands, on the same server. MMOs can enable players to cooperate and compete with each other on a large scale, and sometimes to interact meaningfully with people around the world."

online game - fail

-solo, private group mode swich that i can summon any time to avoid enemy players.

capable of supporting large numbers of players, typically from hundreds to thousandson the same server - fail

enable players to cooperate on a large scale - fail

-only CG's,
-exploration expeditions is like running in group of people around the forest in World of warcraft - you can do it alone or in a group, it doesnt matter coz additional players arent needed to acomplish anything nor they add any content outside common social experience,
-BGS or Power Play is fun for a moment until you realize that you have to do the same thng (like you are chained to the same activity) week after week, and really you dont feel you achived anything nor you action mean something. In BGS you have diplomacy, wars, alliances, politics - looks great... until you have done it and see there is nothing there and whole BGS is basically pointless like Power Play. BGS have two problems - wars with other player faction (it dont feel like war) and sense of achivement coz only some exel info on the map and mission board changes and you really cant lose anthing. So BGS and PP fail due to simple fact overwhelming number of players just ignore it.

compete with each other on a large scale - fail

- so basically PP and BGS decsribed abve.

So what do you think guys - what animal ED is ... ?

... and please for (whatever you are scared of) sake dont say ED is MMO coz FD said so, its like "the Earth is flat" coz someone said so... [noob]

It is an MMO, just not the traditional type. Just becasue you say fail, doesn't mean it's true for other people. That fact that everybody influences the BGS whether you are in solo, a private group or open, is what makes it an MMO.

How can you get a co-op single player game?

So I would say:

Thread: Epic fail.

Rather you should ask:-

"Why does it matter?"

I am so with you on this one.

It is massive game because it takes all player actions into account as part of BGS.

It is single player experience if you play Open but in your own corner of universe or choose Solo mode.

It is co-op if you engage with people whatever mode and do fun things together.

It is MMO if you take part in CGs in Open and find fun busting noob griefers who tries to take on you.

Also question is - is there rule book for certain types of online games how to behave? Or what else you are trying to do there?

Definitely MMO. Single player co-op is something like Far Cry where someone else can come into your game world to complete a campaign that is stored/saved on your computer.

Elite has a persistent universe, even between all consoles. Yes, that means BGS. Flawed as it may be, it's still there. And first-discovered tags on planets, they're very real.

Plus, interaction between players isn't that bad. Just because most players prefer PvE doesn't mean there is no meaningful multiplayer activity. Exploration is much more fun with people, and believe me it's not just for company. Having ships along on an expedition to repair, refuel or even navigate makes a big difference.

And players definitely compete with each other on a large scale. As above, you have competitive PvP and the meta-build rush, you obviously have much racing to explore distant or significant systems, you have BGS groups competing, etc.

So, to summarise:

Thread: Epic fail.

For me players who are doing stuff for in-game reasons (as PvE) defines meaningful multiplayer activity. I am so saddened by fact that all these people see is PvP this and PvP that.

There's so much games that offer that gameplay if you want to win something on Internet so badly. Please leave ED for those who want to engage in in-game multiplayer because that's so rare these days.

Neither.
It is a classical half-reared project,
that shys away from imprinting the one or the
other in its game.

It has MMO mechanics,
a gameworld that is interactable with,
but allows for solo play or co-op
interaction.

It starts to develop fitting meta
and "classes" allowing for tanking
and healing, along with supportive roles.

It simplifies stuff where complexity
would be the spark to inhale life
into the galaxy,
and adds senseless grind instead keeping
to meaningful interactions with consequences.

Elite has no real identity.

Yup, well identified; there's a lot of noise covering up the fact ED is a "multiplayer" game (to use a broad term) with no multiplayer content.

But it's not solo, as you have to play online and are connected to a BGS that undergoes constant number changes as a result of other players.

So I have decided: ED is a multisolo game.

When a game tries to be genre fluid and fails.

Also, I want an award for that pun.

I'm not so sure about that.

To me, it's a game that offers indirect competition through the BGS, etc. while offering the opportunity to directly compete / interact for those so inclined.

It's not a game that requires players to engage in direct competition though.

And that's what makes lot of players who actively seek such competition sad, I understand.

Doesn't make ED a "bad multiplayer" game.

Wow, no FD quote to back up the wetness? Colour me surprised :D

IIRC ED sold a game that allows players to "blaze their own trail". So yes, players like yourself that are getting to blaze the trail you want are gonna be happy, and are going to desperately maintain that status hard as they can.

It doesn't mean that players outside of your vision of ED are getting what they paid for though.
