Beam laser - Fixed or Gimbal for Python

Fixed. Everyone uses chaff now, which you bypass by un-targeting your target...leading to fixed anyway. Also, you get to improve your aim.

Bigger ships, to me at least, seem easier with fixed lasers. Small, zippy ships I'm all over the place, so I can understand gimbals there.

A python or anaconda, you are just a (mostly) fixed point in space. Everyone else is moving about while you just zap them.

Good luck on using fixed waps on a python shooting a vulture or other agile small ship.
You will never hit with more than 2 wappons, and not often, while the vulture is doing circles around you, and hit you with 2 pulses all the time.

And pvp with a python ? Do you see any in open ?

I've flown a python in pvp since 1.0, if you can't get fixed on target vs a vulture, you need to change ship. (or run gimbals / turrets and be less effective)

I use Fixed Beams again.

There is tactic against circle tactic (vulture, eagle, sidewinder, viper and cobra).
*Reverse movement. Few sec later, enemy is on my aim again and dead for sure.

With fixed i don't have overheating problem, and weapon have good cooling.
With gimbals - overheating is pain in eye.

You lack in gramatic, or what do you mean ?
You fly a python since 1.0 always in open doing pvp ?

You must be a known comander.

There is always a anti tactic against a tactic.

Can a 747 follow a bird ?

You mean: Can a Eagle follow a Sparrow. :) And can a Sparrow escape from Eagle ;)

Can a 747 follow a bird (ofc is not possible) but you have wrong elements for comparison here.

Ummm neither will work. Both overheat quickly. Can't use 3x C3 fixed or gimbal beams on a Python without overheating quickly - or there's a bug that's been introduced with 1.3 that affects some of us Python drivers.

I am an advocate of fixed weapons. You may find them less effective at first, but if you stick at it, you will be more proficient at killing anything with fixed weapons (in any ship) than gimballed. The main reason for this is the odd PvP encounter. I don't like being affected by chaff. There was a significant change to how gimbal weapons work in 1.3 that not many people have noticed.
.
It was possible to 'cheat' with gimbal weapons before when you were facing chaff. If you de-select the target, you don't get the weapon convergence, but before 1.3, you could select a distant target when affected by chaff, and so long as you were not facing that target, your gimballed weapons converged (this was an exploit). Now your weapons still gimbal when you are not facing a target.
.
Gimballed beams also seem to be less effective at a target around 2Km out then what gimballed pulse lasers are. The beam does damage over time, and the time you will have the beam on the target with gimballed beams at this distance is too short. With pulse lasers, when the gimballed pulse is on the target, you hit it with the pulse and you deliver the full damage of the shot. I think you will find that a gimballed pulse laser does more damage then a gimballed beam at about 2Km distance because of this effect.
.
Generally a rule that I would use if I must use gimballed weapons in combination with fixed is gimballed pulses, and fixed beams, always fixed beams.

Yes and yes, derath is a known commander.

So how often have you been attacked by a Vulture CMDR in open when flying a Python? Never happened to me unless he was in a wing with 3 more Vultures/Pythons/FDL/Clippers/Condas at which point I run anyway.

Had some confrontations with player Vultures in CZs whilst flying a Conda but still can't say how effective the usual reversing tactic works because they either popped or ran before it was necessary.

But as I said, whatever floats your boat - if you miss 50% of the time using fixed, you should definitely use gimbals.

Hello everyone!! I have one Noob question for you all, when i started out in my Sidewinder i had control on the firing of my weapons, when i went over to the viper and now the ASP my turreted and gimballed weapons fire automatically and i dont have control anymore on when they should fire or not. Why is that? Do all turreted and gimballed weapons continiously fire once locked on to a target and having squeezed the trigger? I have looked in the options and modules menu to see if there is a feature that needs turning off and I see nothing. Or do I need to just mount fixed weapons to have control on firing? Thanks!!!

Guys, please help me. I'm find myself in dilemma.
What to do?

3x 3C Beam laser Fixed or
3x 3C Beam laser Gimbal ?

I struggle to hit the target consistently with Fixed and the Python is no Vulture when it comes to maneuverability, but it has the power plant (if you can afford A) to run 3 Gim beams with whatever you want on the mediums
I really like 3x gimballed beams and 2x multi cannons, you can drop the shields of pretty much anything with a full beam charge, and then put some pressure on with the cannons until the beams have recharged, targetting the powerplant from close range is really devastating.

Whicih PP do you have that allows for 3x Large Beams? My c-rated PP melts my ship after a few seconds.

three beam lasers require the 7A power plant obviously.

I have three fixed beams on the large hardpoints myself. The damage is impressive.

I found this too. I'm a big fan of beams usually but I had to switch my Python to two gimballed pulse plus one fixed beam and then I'm trying out railguns instead of multi-canons alongside that 'cos Isinona made them look so cool in his latest faoff video.
