Beat Up, Rugged, Patchwork and Used Ships

Can we get something like this?

Elite is supposed to be this dangerous universe. But everything looks so new and shiny.

Where are the independent traders in barges with thrusters slapped on? The Firefly esque "bits falling off my ship" ships? The cheaper, used ship market?

Maybe we could have ships with a compartment missing, or downsized due to permanent damage? Scratched and scuffed paint beyond repair? Compartment (s) or power output permanently downsized due to damage.

All of these could result in discpunt prices for these used ships. Imagine a Python or ASP with one small compartment missing, and scuffs/scratches with a 25-30℅ discount on the ship. Stuff like that.

Just an idea to add both some immersion and a new market for ships.

Something similar to this was mentioned as an upcoming feature during Beta Beta by a dev who I don't think is with FDev anymore.

Being able to buy used ships that are in poor repair and have "quirks" such as maybe the cargo hatch occasionally malfunctions even though it's "fully repaired" or your landing gear drops every once in a while when you make a hard turn with boost. Maybe your sensors would bug out and switch targets without warning from time to time.

I want this so bad.... Frontier, why have you forgotten about this potentially amazing feature?

My only request is that each used ship with a quirk or quirks would always have the same quirks. No RNG "this or that might happen" stuff.

Like the occasional misfire on the cargo hatch, or gear dropping during boost turns. Those are predictable and you can plan for and cope with them.

Don't get me wrong. I am fine with 50-60℅ discount ships having multiple quirks. And any of those quirks/bugs firing off or not when the possible cause is used. If it means that opening my cargo hatch might cause both my shields to drop, And my gear to be deployed.

What would ruin the whole thing, is RNG ship quirks. Such as "while boosting/scooping/shooting, something MAY go wrong, but you don't know what." That's too harsh and unpredictable, and not in keeping with knowing where the damaged bits are as advertised.

Could this be the first time we can legitimately say "fly to Hutton Orbital if you want a beat-up looking ship"?

But, yes, a second hand market for used vessels would be fun to bring a bit more personality into purchases. They should include random loadouts, dashboard ornaments, paintjobs and wear. Possibly even some "pre-engineered" upgrades... however, there should be some sort of CON to the PRO of buying a "cheap" used ship: Repairs or Insurance costs more perhaps?

Perhaps these dodgy ship-lots should only be in low-tech anarchy systems, or run by pirate factions - a bit like real-life used-car lots!

That is how it was described and exactly how I would expect it to be implemented also.

You can get your ship looking beat up by not repairing the paintwork, unless it's the black friday paint which is the hardest substance in the know universe.

THE GRIT! MUCHO IMMERSIVO!

I also gave a suggestion to increase age, hair length and beard length as we are exploring for weeks and weeks. Every canopy breach another scar on your face. The grit, wear and tear is so immersive! Also builds character.

Thats the theme I always look jellously on my buttugly Titurel from X Rebirth.

It's the No.1 capital class pirate ship of any Space sim game I've ever seen - and proudly commanded.

If nothing else i would not mind "rustbucket" paintjobs where the ship looks old, beaten up, dented and scorch marks.

Would like to see ships get that way over time, due to use. I mean, Explorers scoop a lot. And land on rugged terrain. Let's age these beauties with use.

Not a bad idea, but would prefer them to work on other much needed areas first to be honest.

It already happens, you just get a respray everytime you have your ship repaired so they always look shiney and new, if you don't want to get your paint repaired use the advanced repair option.

Do it yourself.
Let the paint degrade to 0%, apply overcharge PP 5 to make it "a hot baby", equip an class 3C distributor and 5D thrusters. Let your modules reduce to 60%-80% to apply frequent random malfunctions.....
Tadaaa now you have a used, old, mocking ship with "character" and "spice" :D

One day i need to create something like this O:

That hasn't been true for a while now. Paint repair is totally separated; you need to pick it on purpose same as integrity repairs.

You just described my new Gunship. Lol
(Except it had A grade modules)

It's only a few days old, and it's aging rather badly. Lol

The Squadron paint packs do the beat up look pretty good.

The base colour off-white or black with the squadron colour stripes.

The stripes are patchy already, and there is asymmetrical patchy panels all over the ship, like repairs etc.

See it here on the python;

https://www.frontierstore.net/game-...s-game-extras/python-squadron-paint-pack.html

On the white ships there are dull brown repair patches, and the black ship has dull blue.

Like i say, closest i have seen to having a beat up look.
