Newcomer / Intro Beginning to explore looking for tips

I've set out exploring in my ASP and am currently about 700ly from home. Already finding interesting new systems and worlds but was wondering is there anything thats not really worth scanning in detail. Is there any benefit to scanning a complete system including the far off ice planets or is it better to just scan the larger more interesting planets.

So far I've scanned maybe 12 systems but I've decided if I'm going to do it I may as well do it right and scan everything.

I was headed for the elephant nebula but might turn round at about 1000ly and refit slightly. Don't have any heat sinks and I don't need the weapons, heavy shields or thrusters currently fitted.

Is there anyway in the galaxy map to search for the nearest system with a station?

First I'd like you to take a look at Nutters guide: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=81653

VERY simplified: Pink planets and brown dwarfs= skip

Second: In your galaxy map if you click on a tab there is a way to display realistic looking stars, and then the "graphic" coloured dots. You can choose from faction, economy, government etc. There you can also sort the types of stars you want to find. Doing this you should be able to find some of the closest populated system.

Good hunting ;)

Striping down is overrated. Jump distance isn't the be all, a massive fuel scoop is a better investment.
Everything except roids, ice planets and rocky planets are worth scanning, but just hunt for what interests you. I'm currently going 16kl just to find a cluster of neutron stars. I also like ammonia world's and earth like planets

I search for 'little-blue-dots' mainly. (earth-likes)

Completely ignore asteroids. They give you no return and only become an absolute nuisance.

You get very little from rocky and icy planets too, as Dom said above.

I really wish FD would implement a "full system scanned" bonus to give me more incentive to scan the lower paid planets. Otherwise in the future we're going to see a bunch of systems with all the good stuff already discovered and a bunch of dross left untouched.
