Newcomer / Intro Being killed by Federal Security Agents at RES

Hello everyone, first post!

I started playing ED this week, and while I want to do exploration, I decided to do some bounty hunting at RES sites to make some credits to buy an ASP (I believe that is a good exploration ship).

So, I've been doing RES for a couple of days, everything fine, made 800k credits. But yesterday, for no reason at all, Federal Securiy Agents shot me on sight. I was helping them killing an Anaconda, I got fire from the Anaconda and my ship blew (not blaming Feds here). Anyway, after blowing up I get back to the RES site (my station is on the planet before the one containing the RES site, takes ages to get there, don't know why, I align correctly and set my speed on the top blue bar) I go to helps Feds (green), they scan me (I don't even have a cargo bay), they turn red and blow me down (I didn't shoot them nor do anything). Third time, I get back, just stand ducks, not even deploy my hardpoints, Feds scan me and blow me again. Rebuying my Eagle is 15k credits so it's not that bad, but I'm getting fed up and frustrated by a game mechanic I don't comprehend. I have no bounties, I am not wanted, I am cordial with all factions in the solar system through bounty hunting, and even after dying I get shot again on sight.

I have done some research, people talk about a bug, that it happens from time to time, ... but I got blown up 3 times in a row, for doing nothing, just for existing.

What's wrong?

BTW, I'm looking for an upgrade as the Eagle is too fragile for my noobness, first shoot shields gone, and I never make it out. Would you recommend me Viper Mk III or IV? (that is if Feds stop killing me ofc).

Thanks all, and have a nice day!

Welcome CMDR.

Did you pledge to any powers in Powerplay?

Other than that just double-check your left-HUD --> Transactions tab for any dormant bounties?
And double-check your right-HUD --> STATUS tab --> REPUTATION right panel to make sure you have not become unfriendly/hostile to the Superpower Factions (Federation/Empire/Alliance) or System Factions (if you are still in the system where you are being targeted).

If not in the same system go to the System Map for that system and check RELATIONSHIP status for each faction - think it's the first tab.

The Viper Mk III is a great combat training ship. The Mk IV is less agile, slower and 3 times heavier (stock build).

https://coriolis.io is a great site for checking the base/max stats of each ship (click on the column names to sort by that stat) and for playing with loadouts/builds.

I didn't pledge to any powerplay, don't even know how to do it tbh :p

I did get a message saying I was Cordial with various factions, but never got a message saying my status had changed. I'll check the tabs you mention when I get home to see my reputation. I tried so see it in the right console, but I didn't quite understand it. Since I have only done bounty hunting on wanted ships, and even used a K Scanner before this issue occured, how could I know be hated for helping the Feds take down other ships? It doesn't make sense. If the forces hate me, shouldn't they shoot me in stations too? They seem to only hate me at RES sites. And, if they hate me, can/should I restore my reputation, start over (would need to know how my reputation went bad), or is there a way to regain it (like missions).

Viper Mk III be it then, I checked some builds in coriolis, but I never find half of the equippable items in the stations I visit.

Thanks for your reply! It was really frustrating being shot be Feds all the time, lets see if we can solve it :)

You might have gained a fine in the system, a fine that's gone dormant when your ship was destroyed but is being re-activated when the feds scan you in the RES? Check in your left panel but also under Contacts at the starport (ideally that's a port controlled by the faction that's attacking you). Paying off any dormant fines (and you might have to serve a time penalty before you can do that) should clear your record.

Just to be completely sure (because I agree with Mr. Boombastic that this is how powerplay works, plus Federal Agents are powerplay ships, not system security. They wouldn't bother you, normally) - as you say you don't know what powerplay is -
Did you happen to find yourself on a strange screen with pictures of people?
And did you, mayhaps, liked the blue-haired princess, there and clicked on her? :D
Because that would definitely made Feds hate you. ;)

I haven't seen any lemmings around! Nor a blue-haired princess. I'm even considering deleting my char xD, but I understand this is the learning curve. I want to get back in my sidewinder and experiment to reproduce what's going on. I'll try to upload some pics if need be, though I really hope to solve it myself :)

This has happened to me while hunting for bounties in the latest community mission. Twice I have had my new python blown apart by authority ships. I just though maybe a stray laser beam had hit one and they all came after me. It won't happen again cos I now don't have the 4.5 mil insurance and can't risk flying it until I do.

But I was blown up 3 times in a row without shooting, could I have a dormant bounty three levels deep? ;P

You don't get rid of a bounty by dying. It's dormant - you get scanned - it gets reactivated - you get killed - it becomes dormant - you get scanned - you catch my drift. :)
Just get out of the system. :)

So, the only way to see the dormant bounty is to get scanned by security and run? I mean, I get it, but I don't like the game mechanic :p

I'll try to check everything, if nothing works, I guess I'll leave the system and put a red mark on it. But I'd really like to understand how I earned a bounty, so it doesn't happen again unless I want it to

I guess if I only get killed in one system it's a faction or dormant bounty thing, if I get slained in all I've been cursed by the blue-haired princess

No a dormant bounty should show up in your transactions tab, when it times out to a legacy fine that won't appear anywhere till decades/years/months later you open the contacts page in a station run by the faction and there the fine will be waiting for you to pay it off or you to die before you can dock elsewhere so they can add it to the rebuy cost.

Well you can reduce the chance of it being stray shots by switching to an all turret mount they pretty much miss non target vessels automatically for the cost of more cost, more weight and less boom per shot.

Remember some minor factions are multi-system and will be after you anywhere they control.

So, you were all right! It is a 400CR dormant bounty. It is listed in the left panel, under transactions, and in the right panel, under reputation, at the bottom. I tried uploading two ingame screenshots, but it looks like the forum doesn't like you uploading screenshots created ingame [haha] not even converted to jpg.

So, I'll move my out of this system and go to another one where the faction doesn't exist.

Thanks a lot everyone, I was quite frustrated yesterday! I swear I did not see it, but now I do see it.

Gonna try make some more credits to buy that viper [yesnod]

Not sure what the typical thanks and farewell is in ED, so, as we said in "another spaceship game", fly safe!

400 credit bounty/fine will have been friendly fire when a stray shot will have hit the local security or before your scanner confirmed the ship was WANTED. Happens to the best of us. Well happens to me at least once when RES farming during a bounty hunting community goal. [hotas]

Quick tip on 'friendly fire' on a clean ship as long as the ship you hit doesn't get destroyed while you are in range:

  1. As soon as you see the red WANTED tag on your HUD or start seeing red on your radar then run/boost the hell out of there away from the planet, asteroid belt and security services. If you are friendly/allied with the locals then sometimes they allow a few 'friendly' hits before they turn against you.
  2. Whilst boosting quickly select a system to high-wake to (select Nav panel, scroll UP so you are at the bottom of the list, LOCK on destination). You can also preselect your 'escape' target system before you engage in combat although sometimes it's good to know where the RES centre is.
  3. Keep boosting until you are out of mass-lock then jump.

If you do that then you should receive a small bounty with a 10 minute countdown timer, so in the new system you can either go to a station to repair your ship or just wait around in super cruise till the bounty timer on your Transactions tab turns to 'ON H-JUMP' . This means you can now jump back to the previous system and your WANTED tag will have gone. Then all you need to do is dock at a station in that system and pay off the small legacy fine with no 7 day ban. And can then go back to the RES for some more bounties.

By the way if you want to add an image to the forums: upload to http://imgur.com ; hover over the image; click down V arrow; get share links; copy&paste BBCode
You don't need to register with them to upload images - only useful if you want to delete the image at a later date.

Frontier stopped the uploading of images to their servers 6 months back as it was causing some space issues.

Thanks for the escape tips! For now I can help anyone in desperate need to get blown up with mine [haha]

I left the system and went to another RES site. It was low level, but it was a lot of fun! Planning on going back to a low level sometime. On my way back to the station with my bounties I got interdicted by an NPC, it was awesome, I was like "I'm gonna die but this is so cool!". I did survive, the NPC was on a DBS but was novice level, I outrunned him on my Eagle and waited for the space police to join me.

Finally I went to Kremainn as I read it was good since it has stations near RES sites, and it is good!

Before that I bought a Viper Mk III. I thought I wanted the Mk IV, even though it is more bulky, but it would be nice to withstand some shots from High RES sites rats. Anyway, since I was recommended the Mk III I went for it, and I'm really enjoying it! Need to get better weapons, maybe gimbaled since I'm still learning how to position myself at the tail of my enemy while not hitting asteroids, but I bought a pair of multi-cannon just to try + the 2 pulse (default), and it looks pretty good! Gonna try upgrading those soon.

I'm gonna use my "strike 2" at attaching the dormant bounty images, in case someone as noob as me comes and reads this thread :D
