Best all-rounder

After going back to 0 credit, and not feeling the need to work up to bigger ships, although I currently have 45million in my bank. I seem to have got stuck on the ASP E as an allrounder for trade, mining, passenger, and other contracts, it's not bad in a fight either.

But I'm getting bored of my ASP explorer interior in VR.

Is there an alternative to the ASP,

and should Fdev's next ships be all-rounders?

Asp Scout. ;)

(Buff in 2.3)

If you wanna change to somit similar, then try the DBX, i hear in 2.3 this ships gets buffsville, making it even better.

The Federal Assault Ship. It can do everything, though it has less internal modules than the Asp. Still you get enough of them to (barely) do everything you want, and it flies really well. Much more fun to fly than the Asp and much more capable in a fight. You also get 2(!) espresso machines in your cockpit. Nothing beats that.
Of course, it has a crappy jump range and a small fuel tank, so not the most brilliant explorer.

Federal Dropship makes a great trade, planetary and combat-oriented multipurpose ship, though I haven't tried it for mining. Plus, it has a great interior for VR - drink machines!

I vote for the Clipper or Dropship. For the most fun, you can't beat a Cobra3. Python is also a fine choice, I hate it, but it's a fine ship.

Any reason you are limiting yourself to just the one ship?

I found the ASps longer jump range makes it great for doing missions, especially non-combat ones. I don't do engineering, heard it was a grind, which I don't want to get into.

I want to be a nomad, like I was in Frontier, but I must admit it's hard to get missions in new systems.

That sounds good, how long does it take to get one, I have no rep with the Feds.

Well as mentioned above, I can only agree, Python, it is the ultimate multipurpose. Pretty much nothing it cannot do reasonably well, mission running, cargo hauler, combat. It could have better jumprange though.

It's a few ranks up, but it won't take too long if you focus on doing missions for Fed-aligned factions. Note of caution, though; the Dropship has maybe half the jump range of the Asp Explorer, so it's not the best for long hauls. However, I've engineered mine and get around 21ly unladen.

Additionally, the FDS handles heavy; it drifts and is much slower than the AspE. But you can A-rate and engineer it with lightweight mods so that it handles reasonably well. Engineering is way easier now since they don't require commodities anymore.

So my best advice would be try the FDS as a combat-oriented multipurpose; but engineer it and give it a week or two to get used to its handling. But keep the AspE for exploration and laung-haul missions such as Sothis or deep-space passenger stuff.

Perhaps not the obvious/popular choice for a number of reasons, and if you have access, try to Cobra IV.

As a successor to the Cobra III it's, uhmm... questionable... but if you think of it as a mini-Python, it's actually not that bad!

Sacrilege ! No ship can be in the same sentence or breath as the Python leave alone comparisons drawn ;)

Like everything in this game, engineering is only grindy if you make it that way.

One suggestion that can suit a nomad style of play is rare goods trading. It's also good for quickly becoming allied with a faction where you sell the goods.

Agreed. The Python is the king of multipurpose. However, it's much more expensive than the Federal Dropship, Asp Explorer, etc. and has an awful cockpit in VR with its limiting windshield, annoying crossbars and used-car interior. It does have a vintage-80s vibe, which some might like, but the orange accents and scuffed surfaces ruin it for me. But for pure utility with cost not a factor, it wins hands down.

I'd never thought of the Orca as anything but a passenger ship. But now I'm intruigued. Thanks for the enlightenment!

Hehe!

I really like the Python cockpit in VR. Something about it makes me think it looks like a real workhorse. I can imagine it being used for mining, pirating, smuggling, combat... :)

I think "used '80s Toyota Corolla," but I get that vibe from all Faulcon DeLacy ships. I guess I'm more of a Core Dynamics pilot. :)
