Best challenging PvE experience ?

No. it's really not. It's worse, at least for me. I just did the CZ grind for days straight for my faction, and it's a miserable bullet-sponging grind. The only time I truly enjoyed myself was when I winged up with other players flying my Eagle in a High CZ (something I would not attempt alone). But this isn't the most effective way to win a war - that requires soloing CZs over and over and over again, which is the very definition of "grind".

But that's just my personal opinion on the matter. 🤷
Interesting...It;s the most exciting time in the game for me, when I have a war I care about, stopping some rubbish factoin from getting closer to earth, and I'm in the CZs, practicing my aim with certain weapons and refining my basic flight skills, PLUS, the epic chance of other players joining the other side at any time and a major dogfight ensuing...It really gets the adrenalin going if you already have two or three NPCs on you and then a player joins in! And while I'm waiting for players, I do find it entertaining enough to keep trying to break the squad records. Here's an example...sorry for the length of the vid, you can skip the first 5 mins if you like, but the battle is intense and the ending is EXQUISITE! Kudos to my enemy he never gave up and died while trying to combat repair. o7

It's the very dull, repetitive AI and the use of bullet-sponge hull tanks that makes CZs boring for me. If I want to refine my flight skills and fixed weapons aiming, I'll take my railgun Eagle to a RES - that's much more fun. The only thing a CZ challenges me at is my patience.

This indeed would be epic, but our opposition was fighting in PG / Solo, so there were no major dogfights to be found. That said, players are just as likely to be bullet sponges as CG NPCs are (one of the reasons I actually support the use of premium ammo), so even PvP is a grind in many cases, but you and I have already danced this dance :p

It just goes to show that one man's "This is so much fun!" is another man's "This is a boring grind..." I guess the OP will just have to try it out and decide for himself.

I'm glad you added that last sentence, because the context of the thread has been to help an OP with less experience, not to rant on about how much you dislike CZs for "personal reasons." :)

Compromised nav beacons...

You'll get a mixture of ships from Eagles to Anacondas, most Dangerous or up in rank. In addition there will be a bunch of wings that you can take your chances with. And of course, no security ships to help out...
These are worth searching out. The fun thing is, if you sit and watch (assuming you aren't attacked), most of the ships end up shooting each other. So, if you are not quite good enough or your ship strong enough to engage bigger and better ships, they can get weakened by the other ships before you take them on.

Do the Pirate Activity instances still exist? It's been so long since I've seen a system in that state, but those instances are a lot of fun, like a HazRES with fully engineered NPC pirates.
They do exist, but they are rare. Really fun, and in my opinion harder then High Intensity Conflict Zones (if you have cargo with you). A bit like multiple wing assassinations in a row.
What you call a challenge I call a BORING GRIND. I much prefer taking on pirate assassination missions in an engineered Eagle. This is both challenging and fun! Especially in VR :D
I like going into CZs in my Eagle
Low CZs are quite easy and ships are not really bullet sponges yet (apart from vipers and the federal gun/drop/assault ships... I ignore those except if I can't find anything else to shoot at).
Mediums are also quite doable, but might need some evasions to escape from focus fire by Spec Ops.
High CZs are a bit hit or miss, but taking out a capital ship in an Eagle is great fun and has a bit of a death star trench run feeling (at least with the federal ones). Ships here are a bit tanky though.

Load up a Type-9 with as many delivery missions as you can and try to survive the chain interdictions. It will be a challenging PVE experience.

Not if you’ve engineered your type 9. A type 9 with engineered size 6 prismatics, a fighter and some engineered beams can take any NPC in the game.

Combat Zones ... but the ships are tougher to kill ... and they gang up on you ...... but I'm sure you know this :)
As a returning player - two weeks in or so - I have to say I was very disappointed with the difficulty level of CZs...now that I have some decent engineering, that is! Sure, without any upgrades they were invariably a speedy death sentence

...although that was actually preferable to the interminable chore of mat collection; I often find myself wishing someone would kill me quickly while driving that frikkin SRV!

best spawn rate PvE I had was in compromised nav sites. I went in with 10ton of high value cargo and they all just came to me. Probably had 6-8 ships firing on me at once. As soon as I got close to killing them all or just after killing the last, another wave would come in
