? best out of Quest 3 ?

does someone to know yet, how to get the best out of the QUEST 3 ?
That’s a bit of a vague request 😁

I’ve not made any changes to my Elite Dangerous settings going from Quest 2 to Quest 3 via Link, the Oculus software defaulted to a resolution of 4k x 2k at 72Hz, and the game looks a lot better in the headset - the new pancake lenses give fantastic edge-to-edge clarity and there are no more small god-rays from light sources.

Arioch,
Could you please explain how you connect Quest 3, ie physical connection method & software etc.
I'm currently using the HP Reverb 2 and play using Steam VR.
I'm curious to try Quest 3.

No problem - I upgraded from previous Oculus/Meta headsets so I have an existing Meta account (the Facebook login requirement was ended and is now optional), but you’ll need to set one up for a Q3*.

Oculus desktop program is installed on my PC (this shows your equipment, settings, shop, library etc) so I first launch that, switch on the Q3, then either connect my Link-compatible USB cable or select AirLink** in my headset. Once I’m in the PCVR environment I bring up my desktop view and launch ED (standalone launcher). I’m getting just over 2 hours wireless play before needing to recharge - I’ve not checked the Link usage but the Q2 used to use about 5% per hour so I should imagine it’ll be something similar.

The new pancake lenses are really something, I’m extremely impressed with them 👍

*required: name, email, phone number, DoB, payment info.

**the Q3 will search for PCs on your Wi-Fi network, select your Machine, check the pairing code matches, and you’re off with wireless VR - which was a revelation to me when I got a Q2, no more turn-to-unwind movements 😁 I’m in the same room as my Wi-Fi router so get excellent reception, no visual artefacts or anything.

Thanks very much, I'm curious to see how the Q3's lenses compare to the G2 and to see if Wi-Fi keeps up.
I’ve now seen quite a few reports of Quest 3 AirLink having issues with stuttering on certain routers, looks like a software problem - the guy who makes Virtual Desktop has already brought out a fix and passed his findings onto Meta so hopefully an update will be inbound.

Edit: a G2 owner recently posted their first impressions over of the iL-2 forums, these are possibly relevant for you:

  • Edge-to-edge clarity in the lenses means all the pixels are worth something, so even though the G2 has a sharper middle, the Q3 is better overall.
  • Slightly wider FOV than the G2 but not as good as the Index.

  • Yes, that the general impression I got from the Q3 v G2.

Although nothing announced yet, I'm also keen to see what the Valve Index 2 has to offer, all be it in a completely different price league compared to the good value Q3.

Just a little more from me regarding Elite Dangerous -
  • FoV increase: sat in a Cobra Mk3 looking forward I can see the whole HUD (plus a little bit extra to the sides) and read it clearly without moving my head - in the Quest 2 the fuel gauge and system description sections cut off about halfway and were blurry.
  • I can see a tiny bit of chromatic aberration around the periphery of my view on skybox stars, like they have a green shadow.
  • Using AirLink I experienced the intermittent graphical anomaly where the lower 20% of the screen lightens and has weird pixelated shadows - this also happened with Q2 and was something to do with encoding slices. Not had it when using the Link cable.

GingasVR and VRflightsimguy were talking about this over the weekend, overall they like the Q3 but as an upgrade over the Q2 not as a replacement for a PCVR headset.
Well, I have a Rift S so far . . . I do think a Meta Quest 3 would be a very nice upgrade.

'course, I'm not going to shell out 99 Euros for Meta's Link cable. I can get something very decent for a fraction of that price . . .

I bought a 6ft USB-C to USB 3 cable for £8 and never had any trouble with Link.

Having gone from Rift CV1 - Rift S - Quest 2 - Quest 3, I think you’d see a substantial increase in quality (“screen door” is virtually gone and the pancake lenses are superb, as well as the resolution increase) but I was amazed by how much wireless play changed the feeling of VR games. Took a while to unlearn some of my VR habits in games like Skyrim 😅

Excellent, thank you for confirming my suspicion. I don't need 16 feet, I only play ED, anyway, so... I do wear glasses (near-sighted, -4.5 and -5.5), but I've read the Quest 3 has enough room to allow for glasses.

Let's see when i can get my hands on a Quest 3. 128 GB will be ample, PCVR is my only goal. :)

6ft, not 16ft 😁

I only use it for seated play and it’s ample for that. For everything else, there’s AirLink.

There are four settings on the inside of the visor for glasses adjustment distance from what I can see, looks to be about 11mm travel.

I also went for the 128GB model even though I play standalone stuff, I’ve got 7 games installed and it’s not even halfway full and with cloud saves there’s no issues with uninstalling stuff.

Thank you, I should have clarified: I wished to say that 16 feet (5 metres) is too much for me (when googling for link cables, almost every single cable I got offered was at least 5 metres long) . . . I think 10 feet should be ample, as I have to loop it behind the back of my computer. (Not to toot my own horn, but I've become pretty good at dealing with inches, feet, yards, and miles... ;) ).

Thank you very much for your advice! I WAS about to get an HP Reverb G2, but the small sweetspot, and the higher price (over 700 Euros here!) stayed my hand . . . fortunately. :)

The Quest 3 appears to have made the VR headset market a little more complicated.
See MRTV QUEST 3 AS PCVR HEADSET - The Perfect Upgrade For Your Index, Reverb G2 or Pico 4?

I'm a HP Reverb G2 user and have a high end PC with a 4090, so the Q3 with is better lenses, FOV and WiFi potential makes it very interesting if you can super sample the image to match the G2's image quality.

The VR headset market is already complicated enough :). More so when you factor in how different the requirements of players are; me as a 99,9% seated player with 95% Elite Dangerous, maybe 3% racing and 2% other games, I could care less about the mobility features of headsets like the Q3. For me, the G2 is still the best headset in its price bracket, and my only complaint would indeed be the small sweetspot. Other than that, with my 3080 Ti I'm already not being able to use the G2 to its full abilities in ED, so "moar" in terms of resolution or frame rate means very little to me. With other games that are less demanding (I played Moss for the first time on the weekend, and it looked really good running at 150% and 90 fps) the sweetspot would be my only criticism. If HP did an upgraded version with better lenses, I'd probably buy it.

As for the Q3, my main criticism is still that it is Meta. Yeah I know, they dropped the Facebook requirement after enough pressure, but it's still Meta. They will still collect whatever data they can collect, and I consider them one of the most evil ones. I'm not going to change on that one. But that's maybe a different topic.

As for the features, I have no need for the mobility features (onboard processing, Wifi, battery power), so that's wasted on me, and after the horrible experience with my Rift S I'm not so sure I'd ever want to go back to a headband-integrated audio; a quick google search suggests the Q3 sound is still bad and nowhere near as good as even okayish headphones.

I've been very happy with my G2. Come HP, do an updated version with better lenses! (I know, not happening.)

well we basically have a widening gap opening now with HMDs :
Best Value + standalone : PSVR2, Pico4 vs Quest3
High-end PCVR : BSB, Crystal, Aero and soon the VR1

and everything else just aging as you'd expect with modern consumer devices the likes of the G2, Vive Pro, Index etc

my advice would be to try before you buy, I can tell you with 100% certainty Elite looks great in the Crystal but there are other factors that might not make it the best choice for you...

Hi, I have the issue of the bottom part of my vision being lightened and pixelated on my Q3 and also experienced it in my Q2. I have always used a wired connection. I was hoping with the purchase of the Q3 it would resolve this issue.

I used to experience the problem in my Q2 until I followed the instructions in this thread:

The issue is to do with the image being split into 5 parts for encoding - the solution was to force 1-slice or 3-slice encoding (I used 3-slice and never had the problem again).

I’ve not tried it with the Q3 yet (I’ve not seen it with Link) though something may have changed with encoding if it’s happening in AirLink now. I’ll have a check to see if my registry is still set at 3-slice. Edit2: it had reverted to 5-slice.

Edit: apparently since I last read the thread, the Oculus Debug Tool has been updated and you can deselect sliced encoding (it’s in one of the more recent comments) and choose either H.264 or H.265 codec 👍
