Newcomer / Intro Best passenger starter ship?

I mostly trade/smuggle and thought I should start maybe being a space bus. Any suggestions on a good ship to start slinging passengers with? I have a type-7 and a cobra mkIII currently. I'm thinking an asp explorer (which I used to have and loved)...but that could get pricey fast!! Any help would be appreciated!!

The Type6 makes for a great passenger ship and has good jump range and freakishly good fuel economy if I remember correctly. Can easily accommodate a big fuel scoop as well thanks to its internals, can also fit an extra fuel tank to take some of the pressure off if you run into a dry spot...

You can also make lightning fast credits in a Diamondback Explorer but you have to get lucky in the passenger lounge because the cabins are so small. Good for getting to them engineers in a hurry though...

I'd stick with the Type6, a few lucky runs with rich tourists will get you the AspX and the sexy class 6 passenger cabin, you'll own the passenger lounge once you have that.

i second the t6. quite fast, good jumprange, 3 class 5 optional internals for 2 cabins and a good fuelscoop, class 4 slot for a good shield, and still room for a discovery scaner and a srv (for those passenger missions to geysers!).

below that - maybe a cobra mkIII with 1 cabin ... as sightseeing missions can't be stacked easily, that's a good starter, too.

below class 4 internals, missions can get really hard to get at all - i know what i'm talking about, because i tried to run passenger missions in a courier in the beginning! shipdescription even mentions vip transports.

...sorry, misread. Yeah if you already have a Type7 use that... Why are you concerned about the cost of an AspX when you have a Type7....its 3x more expensive...?

Good missions in the passenger lounge rely on having good local rep. If you're not friendly/allied with the system you get all kinds of scumbags trying to board your ship. Don't except criminals unless you're already an accomplished smuggler or you risk having your ship blown up. Personally, I give the 'secretive' passengers the finger as well.....lost a couple of million to those losers in the past...

I just don't want to have to sell ships anymore. I want to build up my fleet. The Type-7 just doesn't have the best jump range and flies like a ton of bricks. I miss my asp explorer but don't wanna give up the 300+ gargo capacity of the type-7.

I use my Cobra IV, without any engineers and it is OK for smuggling the master criminals and such. At stations, it is easy. Park 10km out, use the radar and checkout what is going on, who is where and lining yourself up to the slot. 4 pips to engines, boost and request docking. you should have that about 5km and scanning start at about 4 km, if you are unlucky. Drop the landing gear as to hit the slot and if you are being scanned, dip down as soon as you are inside; it breaks the line of sight. Outposts? Look for trouble/cops and avoid them. Planets are another matter; interesting to say the least. At the same time; don't believe the myth, that you will die if the scan gets completed. Not if you are already boosting away, in the time it takes to complete. I have done this on a planet, got away hi-waked and came back in 10 to finish the mission.

The Cobra has a boost speed of 301ms, so weigh up how much time to need to land? Over 10 seconds? Run away and jump.

Fair comment, and I do get that mindset. It's nice having a couple of ships set up to perfectly run different professions...

The Type 6 is still probably your best bet here, but I'll stand by my earlier comment, if you want to RP for a little bit a Diamondback Explorer with an important CEO passenger in it just feels awesome in this game.

Having different ships for different jobs is the way to go IMO. Right now I have these ships

Python - Trading and mining. Good cargo space.
AspX - Exploring and Passenger. Eng to a 47LY jump. This make passenger missions quick
Fer De Lance - Bounty hunter
Keelback. Also BH I use this on BH CGs with a SLF installed. Just lots of fun and Cheap insurance if things go south
Eagle - Hey a got free paint job for this so why not.

If you can afford a ship you want to do a job then get it. Chances are it will pay for itself in under a week if you equip it properly and get good rank at what ever station your at.

I love my python and could all these thing with just that ship but it is MUCH more fun to use different ships for different jobs. My next ship is going to be the FGS and I will put a SLF in it and use it instead of the keelback but I won't sell the keelback as it could come in handy.

Hope this helps

Edit: Yes you bet. The Dolphin will be on my buy list as soon as it is available. Tried it on beta and it was FUN. Maybe just use it for luxury passenger missions or maybe just to cruise the strip. It is fun and really good looking.

Ha! I have low experience with smuggling and I don't like the look of transporting pirates at all, the risk of spending an hour ferrying them 600ly and then getting blown to pieces just as you return for the pay check is too much...

I've been forced to smuggle a few times for a promotion mission though...
My tactic is actually done while still in supercruise. I'll find the planet/star the station is orbiting around first and fly to it, then I'll whip around and line up with the stations location. When I drop I'll be right in front of the letterbox (station entrance always faces the planet) and I can usually just go full boost and crash though before the Feds even spawn...

If it's an outpost I don't use any tactic because they tend to be poorly guarded...

For planetary landings I literally just put 4 pips to sys and crash into the dock...

OMG just go into Silent Running and when you warm up a bit drop some heat. That will usually give you over 3 minutes or more, enuff time to park almost anywhere without a scan and no crashing involved.

I can't 'drop some heat'...because I don't have heat sinks....because my slots are all filled with shield boosters.....so I can crash!!! :)

I used the cobra mk111 to get started on passenger missions and made quite a bit of money then bought the Asp X. The Asp X is a fairly versatile ship with better all round stats, i keep a few spare passenger cabins in different systems, saves a bit of time transferring between stations, get the Asp X if u can afford it.
