Best ship for exploring?

The best ship to explore the galaxy is the ship you can be stuck in for long hours doing nothing more productive than adding system after system to you data bank. If the view from your choice of ship won't get old too quickly than that is your best exploration ride. Don't put too much value into jump range unless heading to the rim. Just go. The stars are waiting.

Yes, the view outside of the ship is the main attraction, but for me it's also important what's inside the ship.

My second home for now:

Like is said before...cozy ;)

I'll post it sometime, currently trading (yuk!) in my other Anaconda. I have made some modifications though, namely removing weapons and shields (don't need them) and heatsinks which don't work when you really need them anyway - I can easily jump back into SC/FSD should I be interdicted and I'm not going to fight in the black. I think the current build will do 41.17LY. Working on getting Elite in trading now, or at least as long as I can stand before going off exploring again. Thought - I could get more than 41.17 if I ditch the scanners, it may just be the advantage I need to get that bit further than Sol.

I tried to configure the Conda to large jumps but I thought there was too many compromises, for instance are you still able to Boost? The most Interdicions i get are on my way out into the black :)
I have put my Trade Conda in storage and purchased an Asp and kitted out to my personal requirements.

You should definitely switch to 3A Power Plant: lighter, a bit more juice and MUCH better heat management.

Just checked, and you are not wrong, never mind. I did a lot of messing around getting the Asp kitted out. And I remember some problem with the A3 power plant. cant remember what it was now though.
To late now, I am NOWHERE near a shipyard :)

Currently this is my Asp X: https://coriolis.io/outfit/asp/0p5t...3e0u0k0k2f2i24.AwRjNcu5dYg=.IwBj4yvI?bn=Asp X

36,41 jump [yesnod]

Without shields, Power Distributor, guns and cargo. 4C Fuel Tank (16t): even lighter!
The only concession is the 3A Power Plant: I like to run very cool (... and so I don't need a heat sink launcher) ;)
Unless you are doing it for the route plotter, don't bother with a smaller fuel tank. The tank itself weighs nothing. Its the fuel that weighs and you spend it by jumping

Also please don't resurrect necro posts from over a year ago!

Any ship with the exception of Corvette, FDS, FAS and FDL will do. Honestly.
I use: 52ly range AspE and a 56ly ExploraConda

Wow! I had forgotten that I made this post so long ago..... LOL! I went from the T6 to an AspX. I flew this for a long time (still have it!) Then I bought a Clipper thinking it would be nice for exploring (it wasn't.) Then the Distant Stars expedition came and I bought an Anaconda. The Anny is better for range and haulage, but the AspX has a far better view, which I find to be very important.

Yogi is right!

But

It depend on how you want to explore.

Long range rim exploration - max jump range, use an Anaconda 80LY possible.

All around - Asp will get you a great view and a Class 6 Fuel Scoop which makes it better than a DBX which has slightly more jump range, but not enough to compensate for the smaller fuel scoop.

After that, if your not in any big hurry to get anywhere - just use what you like to fly. Krait(s) and surprisingly, an Orca work very well.

On my last little exploration jaunt I used an iCourier and it was fine.

The Dolphin works quite well too, imo. It's comparable to the DBX in price, trading a bit of jump range (mine maxes out just over 60 ly) for an extra internal slot and the option to take a size 5 fuel scoop or FSD booster.

The Anaconda is great if you need every ly of jump range you can get, although it is worth noting that you don't need more than 60 ly of range to get to system farthest away from Sol. Unless you need to take extra modules for secondary roles or need ALL the jump range, there are cheaper options that will do what you want just as well.

The AspX is good, it can take larger modules than a DBX (namely fuel scoop and FSD booster), but loses out on a bit jump range.

The Krait Phantom is an AspX that can take more (and larger) modules while keeping the same jump range as the less expensive AspX.

I can't say anything about the DBX or Orca (I haven't flown either), but I can say that the Krait II makes an excellent combat ship.

This may be an old thread, but the question will always come up for new and experienced explorers alike. ;)

So I figured I'd post a reminder here that I have a handy chart with coriolis templates for all ships, so you can compare interactively. The table can be sorted by clicking on the column headers. The good news is that with all of the recent buffs, all ships can have a decent exploration build now. You could always explore with any ship before, but some of them required making some hard sacrifices. Those sacrifices have mostly been eliminated with the additional new slots, but of course the jump ranges and other features of the ships vary greatly.
