Ships Best ship for Planetary Activities

Alright, I'm coming clean here. I have idea Where to look for the gravity of a planet at. Do you need the DDS for this?

There are two places where you can check the gravity. The first is in the system map in the info tab. This information might require a DDS for unknown planets, not entirely sure. I think it works with a normal discovery scanner as well but haven't checked this.

The second is in your HUD when you come in to land. This will show the current gravity, i.e. when you're higher up it will show a lower value than when you're close to the surface. But it should be enough to give you an indication of whether it's safe to continue the approach. This one I believe will work even without any discovery scanners at all.

Been using Anaconda since the first day of the Distant Worlds expedition.
Fantastically rugged exploration ship which is surprisingly easy to land on planetary surfaces. Holds a good amount of Srvs too in case you have an 'accident'.

The HUD gravity indicator is awful.
101m height and 0.09G out of 1.09G? How close i need to descend on Anaconda to 3+G planet to understand that i'm gonna crash in a few seconds? :)

Nothing wrong with the HUD indicator. Those are two separate planets in his screenshots.

With little bit of practice landing anything on planet with any gravity is a piece of cake. Had no problems landing Conda on 6+g, people did same with Cutter(even worse vertical thrusters).
It's weird to see people struggle to land Conda on 2g planet. Approach surface in shallow dive, and DO NOT TOUCH VERTICAL THRUSTERS. Just...don't.

Hehe, mate :) Using vertical thruster is exactly what you should be doing on high G worlds (at least for non keyboard users). You can land without shields on 9G planets if vertical thrusters are used correctly, you just need your flight controls setup correctly.

I posted a guide here

I'm aware of this method. But not touching vertical thrusters is an easier solution for people who have difficulties with 2g worlds :)

Not sure how that works dude, the method described makes it incredibly easy to control ships via vertical thrusters from low to high G worlds. Anyway, whatever works best for you mate!

+1 to fellow Keelback flyers!! While technically outclassed by Asp (and most other multi purpose ships) I can't get enough of my Keelback for planet side work!

No seriously. She's a dream under influence.

It is surely not the same planet. It doesn't look like an outdoor world with human breathable atmosphere. :)

Back on topic: I'm returning from Beagle Point on-board of a Keelback, and it is a truly sturdy ship, it grew on me. I never had any issues with planetary landings, though to be frank I never landed in any other ship as I left when Horizons went live. It will definitely get some love with the 2.2 Guardians update!

i think the best is the Diamondback Scout with fixed small bursts and anything you like on mediums (maybe missiles ?)

i tested it and it was perfect.

I have been using my good old Type-6 for a big part of my work, still, planetary visits included.

I actually really love driving around in the SRV (except sometimes on low-G planets), so I have done it in most of the ships I have owned. The Type-6 seems, to me, to be the best compromise of maneuverability, speed, weapon placement, and cargo capacity. Maneuverability is not impressive, but it is enough to position your thrusters if you really get yourself into trouble, and a single boost tends to get you out of it. The weapons are underneath, which give you a good line to attacking skimmers (obviously, I am not thinking settlement assault for this; for that, get something with more muscle, maybe a Keelback if the T6 is still your thing). You can easily get 100 tons in a Type-6 while still having your SRV bay and a shield generator, too.

I was planning on messing around with an exploration build that could do SRV, and from an internal compartment standpoint, the Imperial Courier and Viper MkIV are looking really good. Pretty much anything with at least six internal compartments should suffice, but you really only need four for a dedicated planet-bound ship (I am even considering an Imperial Eagle or Hauler just to do planetary stuff). Having at least two medium hardpoints for missiles and one or two other hardpoints seems like a good place to start for settlement assault.

Smaller ships are usually easier to work with for planetary stuff because it is easier to find a landing place on rough terrain. It can save you lots of time when you can land right next to that crashed ship instead of 500 meters away. Picked up an Asp Scout for comparison (and because it is super fun to fly), and the smaller footprint I have in the T6 really can make a difference. Anything Asp or smaller, maybe a couple things bigger, can even land between the two buildings in those kinds of points of interest.

I'm on Xbox so I'm preparing for Horizons, have my eyes set on a FDS which I compare to a Cobra MKIV only bigger and alot more expensive. One rebuy screen and it's an hour of gametime lost in credits for me. My configuration: https://coriolis.io/outfit/federal_...k7j7j0003050205Cb4d20P92tv6.Iw18aQ==.Aw18aQ==

Unsure about the class 3 hardpoint, I've yet to try cannons and mine launchers and I like to keep different types of setups for my ships instead of what's considered optimal. Curious on what effect force shells would have on skimmers.
