Best VIVE vs Rift review yet

Darn, they are both good.

I was leaning to CV1.. then started to go Vive.... now swinging back to CV1. Have to decide soon and cancel one of the orders.

Dilemna.

Still CV1 for me - better quality visuals is the key factor; would like the better FOV of the Vive but wouldn't sacrifice lesser SDE for it. Room scale - not interested, don't have the space and think I'd agree with the reviewer about the novelty factor after about 10 minutes.

I'm hoping the CV1 headphones are better (aka loud enough) than the reviewer noted as I really want to use them for convenience.

Oculus for all their faults are effectively at second generation on the headset, so while they lack the AR camera, their headset is more refined that the Vive's, as exhibited by two major alterations to the Vive with the Pre and the Final iteration of their headset (which has probably contributed to the high price point). I think the second generation Vive will be a force to be reckoned with, as they'll be able to further refine and lighten the headset.

As the reviewer said, there is no clear "winner" in the first commercial VR offerings as they are both excellent products. With improvements in graphics card technology coming later this year, the cost threshold for ownership is going to go down and the resolutions and frame-rates possible will go up.

If you are on the fence, stay there. Things are going to get better and cheaper and early adopters like myself (had a DK2 and have ordered a CV1) will be able to let you know what the pros and cons are of each model. But nothing can be a substitute for trying them yourself. Only you know what you like.

I'll be at LaveCon this year with my CV1 in July; hopefully (big cheesy grin at FDEV) giving people a go in my Virtual Reality Shipyard on Elite: Dangerous, so see you there!

This review is really very usefull and both products will be absoutely gorgeous!

But this VR discussions makes me really crazy - preordered the Rift CV1 mostly for Elite Dagerous - got nervous because of the silent communication from Oculus and Frontier. Then preordered as well the HTC Vive (really?), but saw a few unboxing videos about the HTC Vive - and now I canceled the preordered of the HTC Vive, because the installation and the long cables would be a too big change in my room!

Usually I am calm like an iceberg, but this topic and the hypes are making me truly nuts.

Always good to keep up to date with VR reviews so thanks for that. I'm keen to own one eventually. But to justify my graphics cards existence for now I'm personally going to wait for a second generation release. These are always a naturally superior development.
I'm hoping by this time all aspects of VR's software and hardware will be optimised and honed for maximum awesomeness.
looking forward to it. :)

I admire your patience! :)

ditto.... also i would not worry about the headphones... unless of course you play in a really loud environment, but chances are the background ambience will be lower at home.

my ONLY concern for the rift now really is software support.... I hope oculus have not made it too hard for indie devs to port their code over to the new run time.

(what i am basically saying is, I just want ED supported ;) )

As a complete newcomer to VR (Only just put on my first VR headset today , the freebie Samsung Gear VR with my S7 Phone, but this blew me away!!), and an Avid ED player, what will work best with Elite Dangerous? Which is easier to setup, which has the best support (Boy am i going to need it!).

In my game playing world which is only ED what is best for this VR Noob!
?

I thank you's

if you want a 100% certainty that ED will be supported then right now the VIVE is your only choice.
the DK2 is currently running in elite using either an old (now defunct) oculus runtime OR people using the 0.8 (most recent released) runtime on steamVR.. Right now tho, steamVR does not work on the most recent internal runtime that the CV1 uses.

Its a fair bet this will change around (hopefully before) launch, but if ED is essential, the only certain bet is the vive.
I am gambling on a CV1 and HOPE it is supported because for me, the CV1 is a better fit..

hovering over an S7 myself, just to give the gearVR a look, but it is a bit rich for my blood.

Thanks Mike, much appreciated. As this is not a Phone thread, i won't go off topic, but only to say it is Great, I am on the Samsung Renew program so i can change twice in a 24 month period, so thats pretty much a new phone evry year!

The Gear VR is mind blowing , for me, but today was THE FIRST time i ever strapped a VR Headset on, and it has me aching for the Launch. I think it has to be the Vive for me, from what you said. I am not technically minded, so i just need to plug it in and do a bit of this and That and it work, then have the support to help me out!!

Thanks again and have a bit of VR rep from me.

I was originally planning to get the CV1 and Vive, but they're similar enough I've stuck with the CV1 and spent the Vive money and an S7 Edge with "free" Gear VR. Gear VR is nice, but not as good as the DK2 - the FOV is lower and, with no positional tracking, it's more like a DK1. It's definitely great as a mobile solution and a no brainer if you have a compatible phone, but it's not something to "invest" in if you already have PC based VR, DK2 or better (including Vive).

You don't need to be technically minded for either of the headsets. In fact one of the things that draws me to the CV1 instead of the VIVE is the simplicity of set-up. You may not need to be technically minded to use the VIVE, but you do need to be DIY minded. I hate the idea of screwing things to walls and I suspect that I'd be hearing the thump of lighthouses hitting floors if I were to attempt it.

Even the thought of... <erk> tidying up.. breaks me out in a cold sweat.

DIY is not an issue to me, Technical challenges are a bit different :)

I'd like to pre-order to get my hands on one ASAP, but as mentioned, for me Elite Dangerous 100% compatibility is paramount to my decision, not only 100% compatibility, but plug and play is essential too. OK, 100% plug and play may not be achievable, but i don't want it to be harder than fitting in a new Graphics card, downloading drivers, setting up triple monitors, that sort/type of level of technical involvement i would be happy with.

So in my case (VR for ED), guess i'll hang on till both VR sets are in the market and people can report back how ED works (Or not) with each.
