Best way to deal with gankers in Open

Is there anyway to look back at the log to see who they were and block them after exiting the game? I saw one name, which I think was CMDR stupiddumbdumb (seriously). Not sure the other.
Yes. One of the sub-tabs in the Contacts screen shows you other players you met and when. It will say if they destroyed you. Click on a name for options including Block.

They cannot kill what they cannot catch.

Personally, I fly in Open for everything as I enjoy the fun in avoiding the killers. That makes me a minority on the forum, but I see plenty of non-killer CMDRs in Open.

Case in point - I did the trade CG in Open, both the meat one and the Rare goods one and though there were some PvP possibles in my instance, they didn't pursue. Was great fun.

I use ED Recon to help me spot baddies and in highly recommend it.

I'd rather thwart their wiles, or at least attempt to - living my smuggler pilot RP dream.

The only thing I did find annoying was a CMDR sitting in Deciat above Farseer with long range rails, meaning they were beyond the bases lasers so they could get potshots off easily with no station defense. I saw a rebuy screen that day. From chatting to the PvP after (who told me about aforementioned long range rails) I reckon you have 2 options - either jump out and reset the instance, or build a real bullet tank so you can try and dock before you lose the lot. Once I head to Farseer again, I'll be trying out one of those options.

Good hunting.

Just understand supercruise mechanics and acceleration and how it impacts FSDI ability. Avoid the interdiction. Forget trying to beat it. If you fly perpendicular to the orbital plane you can get going really fast. They cant catch you going really far really fast. Then come in towards your target really fast too and use the planets gravity to slow you down.

3 options occur OP....
1 - If your in a Trade ship - for the love of God ruuuuuuuuuuun! Ahhhhh!
2 - If your in a PvE ship - leave - but try and damage the 'Ganker Ego' with a snide remark in local.
3 - If your in a PvP ship - Annihilate them - o7

If you install the rather good companion app EDDiscovery (promoted by @robbyp on the forum) one of it s functions is to make your log 'human readable' and feed useful information to several useful outside resources also.

Actually, it is excellent for knowing pretty much everything about your play, including what materials you have...

Open? I would rather pass shards of glass.
Don't waste your time or credits in open unless you are fully determined to be attacked, destroyed, and heckled for it.
Do your grinding, exploring, and travels in closed where your time & creds won't be wasted.
Personally, I don't see a point to open for new players, long-time players, or any reasonable player. I've tried, I fought, I smartened up . Open is just a bunch of re-buy screens or time wasted escaping your own murder.
Unless your a glutton for punishment, open is an unfortunate waste of time. The only pilots that benefit from open are those seeking to destroy other pilots they come into contact with, i.e. have access to.
Save yourself the grief, play Closed or Private. When your ready to be harassed, destroyed, and ready to dish out rebuy credits, head to open.
Well, that's certainly an opinion... I guess.
Sounds like you only hung around Deciat or something. I play in Open a lot. I'm no glutton for punsihment either, or a ganker. My last rebuy by another cmdr was months ago. I've also never been harassed. I mean, at CG's, Shinrarta and Deciat you gotta watch your six, but on the whole, your post doesn't come off as a balanced view on open in the slightest.

To OP: fighting gankers is only worth it if you're willing to put a lot of time in it. And I don't even mean engineering, I mean practicing fighting other cmdrs. If you don't feel like doing that, just make sure you fly a build that can withstand some damage and get out quickly. Or go PG or Solo, nothing wrong with that either.
I just fly open a lot because I like the idea of being at risk, and I like to meet the occasional cmdr. I spend a lot of time on the edge on the bubble, and you're completely safe there, but when I venture to the core worlds, I like the idea I might be attacked. YMMV of course. That's what the different modes are for.

o7 and fly safe, or not.

Hi,

Looking for some feedback, mostly out of curiosity. I have owned ED since the original Alpha but have been time limited due to real world obligations. I left the bubble between SRVs and engineers towards Colonia, arriving a few weeks ago. Long story short, returned to the bubble via a sidewinder self-destruct to unlock engineers & the Guardian FSD booster.

Anyway... I decided to do some rescue missions at Sol (I play in Open.) Bringing me to the question; what is the best way to deal with gankers? Engineer a ship and fight perhaps an unfair fight (because if they were actually good at PvP they would be in a league and not spending time killing innocents; so most likely they are well engineered), get the occasional win forcing a rebuy; or just submit, boost and jump away, ruining thier fun? Welcome other suggestions as well.

To clarify, I have only been ganked once (by two players) but it got me thinking...
1. Be aware of your surroundings. Your best defense against danger is identifying potential threats before they become a problem. Watch your sensor panel for any hollow signatures, and check the comms panel for ships nearby. An FDL in local chat is far more dangerous than say, a Type 6. They may be minding their own business, but it's safe to always assume hostility.

2. Equip a decent shield. ~500mj @ full pips to systems will go a lot farther than people realize. More is better, especially for larger ships.

3. If you are not actively seeking PvP, focus on escape. Your trade/mining/passenger/multirole ship will not likely stand a chance against a PvP or gank-spec ship if you stick around to fight-- however it doesn't take a battle-built FDL or ace piloting skills to get away from danger. If you escape a few times, you may very well be left alone. Competence is respected by many, even those who gank.

4. Want to dispense some justice? Build a dedicated combat ship, and practice, practice, practice. While some gankers aren't particularly good at the game (It doesn't take much skill to frag a T7 to death), that isn't always the case. Many ganking types are dedicated PvP pilots as well, and will likely stomp you-- engineering is not enough on its own to be competitive.

5. Befriend the bad guys. If you wish to learn more about PvP, ship building, or anything like that, they are often open to questions. They may be 'bad guys' in game, but like you and your buddies, they are often just friends playing the game the way the like to play it. Do not mistake criminal behavior in-game as a representation of someone's real-life character. Some of the best friends I've ever made online also happen to be space-terrorists in a video game, and had they never shot at me, I never would have met them.

Honestly, while I fly the pirate flag on the forum, a huge chunk of the stuff I do in the game is helping out regular, lawful players who just want to chill and have fun and play. People who are nervous about PvPing or otherwise getting their hands dirty, or just need a more experienced player to help them out with something or give their build a once-over before they spend materials on it.

Plus there's been some fun occasions when some tryhard tried starting trouble with someone that had me on speed-dial. One of my earliest memories after starting to play in open was someone talking smack and threatening to kill a buddy when they undocked, my buddy being a new player in a courier and said smack-talker flying a python. A gimballed-beam python with no chaff.
My response was essentially "lmao okay I'll be right there"

What Cknarf said.

If you are situationally aware and are willing to learn teach yourself how to not panic and high wake, Open will be of no consequence to you.

If you just want to get stuff done and are particularly risk averse that day, then when travelling in Deciat, Shin or CGs, go Solo.

I am a PvPer with 2 billion in FDL rebuys. I am very comfortable in combat; nevertheless, even I use Solo in Deciat, Shin and CGs.

The "block" function is great for repeated harassment. However, it may create instancing havoc. If you and your friends are having a difficult time trying to instance with each other, try unblocking.

I am very interested to see how instancing works in Elite Dangerous Odyssey. Currently, sometimes trying to set up a just a 3v3 is a rng fest.

Your premise that gankers are bad in PvP will end in rebuys.
Well, you can play on their terms AKA fight them.

Or you can do what most of others do when they could not be bothered with a fight:

Build your ship for survival - shields, speed, hull and modules' integrity is better than few ly jump, few more tons of cargo, whatever.

Enable bandwidth monitor. Always have a nearby system ready to be selected. If interdicted, submit, stay evasive and highwake.
(y)
Get a specialist fast ship either a FSDI and interdict the hell out of them.
(y) iCourier works perfect for this and was the "entry drug" for many PvPers, me included
#1. Get FDEV to give us a PVE Open server option.

#2. See #1. Any questions?
Nah.
Is this going to turn into this weeks thread about a new mode?
See above, you've been jigawattninja'd 😁

(y) keep in mind though engineering has options for the FSDi that make interdictions over a long range and in wide angles possible.

Well, this is an easy one. Buy a Vulture and fit frags. Then nobody will gank you. I know it sounds absurd, considering all the rumors about those scary gankers, but once you're in the Vulture, their "ninja skills" kind of fade away very quickly.

Of curz, this will make your life as a miner, trader, explorer etc. misserable, but at least you won't get ganked, and honestly, being a miner in open doesn't make much sense. Just use a PG to play with friends. As an explorer, once you are in the black, the chance of meeting a ganker is about the same as winning the lottery.

You spelled iCourier wrong 😁

How does one block a ganker?
If you really want feedback I'll suggest not playing always in Open. It's easy to guess where gankers will hang around; just avoid being their entertainment.

Alternatively, resolve that every ganker gets exactly one go at you: use Block. The nature of Open changes markedly after only a few blocks, because when you sling a ganker out of your galaxy you exclude their wingmates too.

How does one block a ganker?
There are 2 methods. One, get blown up by the Ganker, go to contacts in your comms panel (I think) see the last person you met and you can block the from there.

The other is far more effective, don’t fly in OPEN in those 5-10 ‘hotspot’ systems. Engineer systems for example. This way you don’t pay for the rebuy to find out a name. Gankers only hang around where they know they’ll find targets, engineer systems, CG systems. If you’re going to one of those, hop into SOLO or PG, 99.999999999999999999% of the rest of the 400billion systems should be ok in OPEN.
