Bethesda's new IP "Starfield" slowly surfaces

Well, at least now we have a logo for Starfield. They didn't tell us anything else about it though.

Looking forward to learning more about it in 2019.

True :)

Being fair, regardless of ED's many, many flaws, there's just nothing in the foreseeable horizon that could kill ED, or even compete in the same genre.

Even X4 is a different kind of game. The only released game in the same genre is Evochron, and although it does many things very well and ED could definitively borrow some inspiration from it in certain aspects, as a whole it's just not on ED's level.

As for Starfield, it will most likely be a space based first person RPG game. Skyrim in space (not complaining). I'm eager to see it and play it, but will most surely be a completely different kind of game than ED.

I agree. I am certainly interested in it, but I very much doubt it will kill ED. There is nothing on the horizon at the moment that comes close, even though ED could do with a bit of competition.

I thought tetris 7 was going to do that.

Todd Howard talked about Starfield a bit more today at E3 in an interview:

- Starfield has been in production for a long time and is a playable state.
- Starfield may have some sort of social connection to it, but make no mistake this is Bethesda's next big Single Player experience. Not an online focused game

Also:

- ESVI is in a pre production state. It is not currently in a playable capacity. The technology for the game still "doesn't exist yet but is getting closer" aka next generation consoles are approaching soon.
- Fallout 76 has the largest team that a BGS project has ever had.

Interesting to note that both Starfield and Elder Scrolls 6 are "next gen" games, so they both most likely used a newer, more modern version of Bethesda's game engine. Starfield is a straight up single player game though, so it will be heavily modded. :)

And Starfield is at least a year or two out yet. :(

My guess is that "something for everybody" quote bit from the video means in no way will Starfield be a deep realism 1:1 galaxy or solar system orrery sim like ED. Lots of sci-fi fantasy style and art design with backdrops more like the X games, while more realistic looking than NMS. If it's going to have lots of vast star systems, my guess it'll be extremely shortcut simplified, perhaps with the star systems navigable by 2d limits in an illusory 3d view and far less meticulous than ED's supercruise. And probably lots of wormholes and "fast travel"/hyperspace similar to the map views in both ES & Fallout games. Sure, it'll probably siphon a lot of gametime away from ED perhaps for a month or more, but I'd expect everyone will return to ED as they usually do. If I'm wrong and they somehow shockingly supercede ED with encapsulating a lot of similar core elements as a backdrop, well they're Bethsesda. I recall Morrowind being so pioneering of 3D rpgs, so if anyone could do it , it'd be them.
