BEWARE: Human piloted ships displayed as (solid) NPC in sensors in combat zone

Just got blown up by a human pilot at one of the CG combat zones. I was taken in because the sensors were displaying a solid icon which is supposed to mean NPC (computer) combatant.

EDIT: Definitely Human. Appears in my contacts history as a "Killed You".

Would the "recent contacts" tab show an alleged NPC's name if they were actually another CMDR?

Probably won't help here but if anybody else thinks it's happening, maybe get a screenie of the "NPC" ship and then get a screenie of the Recent Contacts tab if the NPC appears there.

Three questions...

1/ Im assuming ye were in open? Please say ye werent cos thatd be way cooler and would mean no need to read the second question, as the riddle is solved...ye need to visit specsavers. If yer in in open, then move to question 2.

2/ Are ye absolutely certain it was a player? A pic would be sorta ok, but a video clip would be ideal...anything less and its yer word against theirs unless ye kick yer suspicions upstairs with a ticket to the ivory tower, and they investigate. Is it possible? If yer curious because yer certain, then goto question 3...if yer confused cos ye just realized what yer caffiene/alcohol/THC intake has been during the evening, and ye dont have proof then...good luck.

3/ What platform are ye on? The reason I ask is quite simply that if such a thing were possible, it would mean different things to different platforms. PC fer example can run scripts whereas console gamers cant, though both platforms can mess with their router settings. Need more detail basically...its like trying to find treasure without a map, clues or a ship, just a sunday night drunken rumor...

Players only in recent contacts, so that would work as a check after the fact.

Having said that, I'm also thinking silent running and waiting outside the fight for a player to be shieldless and damaged. That's an old trick.

More data required really, or we could speculate in an increasingly wild way.

Nothing much, chased me out of the combat zone and shot me up when I turned to fight what I thought was an NPC.

I tend to avoid PvP players and their overpowered ships.

I have seen this before, presume it is a bug.

I have seen similar posts to mine in the forums before, never believed it until today, I assume it is a credit-sink, less inclined to think it is a "bug".

Just want to point out that just because the contact history says cmdr xyz killed, it doesnt mean that he really killed you. THAT is really a well known bug.
On friday I winged up with a few random cmdrs at the cg, we blew up a lot of stuff, returned to the station and the contact list said one of them has killed me.
Noone killed me, not in the last half year.
I had this happen a few times now.

Yeh, I get that nearly every time I wing up.
Although I do have an itchy trigger finger when there are Condas about...:D

I think it's much more serious than that.

Earlier this year we had real people pretending to be NPCS - we termed them Bots

Now we have NPCS mimicking humans - "New Term required" - suggestions welcome

In the heat of battle, all sorts of strange things seem to happen, but when you're relaxed and playing back the video, you can see something, which makes sense of what you thought had happened. Without video evidence, you're wasting your time discussing it because there are so many possibilities that can cause what you thought happened, the least likely of which are bugs and cheating.

It's a long standing bug.

Can also work the other way, showing NPCs as hollow contacts.

I see this bug at least once or twice at virtually every CG and have for years, possibly since pre-release.
