BEWARE OF LENOVO EXPLORER!

Bought a Lenovo explorer on march 2018. The hinge that keeps the visor and the headband together broke with normal use on november because the plastic that holds the metal hinges is frail and low quality.

still within 1 year factory warranty, they took it for repair and then told me they would proceed with repairs only if I paid the repair bill which costs more than a new unit.

They actually try to scam people discouraging them with pay to call support hotlines, no mail addresses, and confusing clauses in warranty policies which they renew every year.

Since I do not want to waste time with them, my only option was to renounce to my right to have it repaired and report my bad experience so that people will boycott them.

Hope it helps people who are researching for vr headsets. Goin' back to my duct tape.

No printed part on Thingiverse I am afraid. Also not in the UK. Thank you for your kindness though.

For UK Commanders....

here's a nice article explaining consumer law and rights to repair / replacement.

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance...cused-of-denying-six-year-warranty-right.html

In any case, their tactics are based on making contact with support difficult and expensive. Customers have no defense against it. Who has the will/time to start a class action? I have better things to do with my time and so... they end up without taking responsibility. Look over the internet about lenovo support. It is a mess.

I'm sorry to hear of your woes. In the UK our first recourse for goods that fail due to manufacturing flaw is with the Vendor not the manufacturer and that includes online sales.

I see and thank you for the kindness. Problem is, vendor and manufacturer were the same entity in my transaction. A chinese multinational.

Hi CMDR,

Sorry to hear that from you.
I have a Lenovo Explorer too since it first appeared on market and I played with it over 1000h. Tho only thing broke apart was the Clip Holding the cables in place which I not even bothered to repair but used an own cable strap as replacement. Sorry to hear that your's broke but I think every thing can break can it? It's not that every device breaks obviously.

And yes, Lenovo seems to have abmyssal support, but I cannot speak for myself because I was luckily not in Need of it. Best strategy if still reaching for this device would be to buy it at Amazon to avoid the manufacturers support.

For the ones still looking for alternatives at a small budget, you can also have a look at the other WMR devices - the Samsung Odyssee[+] being the most advanced one.
They offer superior resolution than Oculus or Vive and are compatible with SteamVR and (with ReVive Software) even the Oculus Store. Lenses are pretty the same (but personally the best lenses I ever saw were on the PSVR - which really supprised me and which difference that makes).

Yes, I only want to warn people that the plastic they use is very flimsy and is very prone to rupturing even before one year of use, not what you would expect from such a costly device.
And if it happens, you are screwed even with their fake factory warranty.

I'ms currently waiting for Lenovo to come and fix my thinkpad for the 4th time in 3 years, you have my sympathies Lex.
Broken power button this time as they have elected to use the cheapest, worst design possible for this commonly used component which apparently requires an entire new top for the laptop.
It sounds like we are both victims of the same terrible material choice and QC.
Bring back IBM.

"Older" Lenovo kit was\is good - up to around the time of the x230 laptop (2012) - this was the last of the "IBM" stuff - well built , very upgradable (x220 and x230 are great with a cheap egpu) easy to repair and lots of parts available. Then in 2013 we get stuff like the x240 - cheap nasty plastic - worlds worst ever trackpad and a horrible design that makes repair much more difficult. Most of their other laptops got the same "plastic" makeover at around the same time. As a result my then employer changed from Lenovo to HP and my current employer also switched around then to Dell and Hp.
Disclaimer - I have to repair this stuff for a living - dont touch anything Lenovo after 2012 is my advice - before that it was pretty solid.

What model ? - the older (better) ones have the power button as part of the keyboard - available on ebay from around £25 up - easy 5 min replacement job.

T560. They're coming to fix it on Monday* as its still under warranty.
(*: engineer says Monday, but according to lenovo support is was yesterday am or today).

The power button isn't fixed to the card as expected but is attached to the casing (well rattling around inside now!) via thin bits of plastic.

sorry for the hijack, Lex!

I've boycotted Lenovo since the built in spyware debacle years back. Personally and professionally.

All computer related purchase requests for the company I work for are sent to me for review. This includes contractors and consultants. If Lenovo is in any part of the package, I disapprove it and suggest another brand.

I heard that the Lenovo Explorer isn't coming out until later this year. But it is expected to have heat issues that a lot of people are worried about. Nonetheless, it remains the long awaited follow-on to the Asp Explorer.
