Beyond 3.x funding.

Just interested if FD have indicated how Beyond will be funded. I got the impression they have moved away from segmenting the player base, as they did with the Horizons patch.
Should I be buying stuff from the shop?

FD are a multiple game studio and doing pretty well, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

if they make their beying features proper and correct lots of happy gamers will spend time in the game and they will also spent money on shopitems.

Still waiting for the yellow pulse version.

No details yet, but Beyond should really be considered part of Horizons, so expect info in august/september about the next paid expansion in 2019.

Son, they got enough, however if you see anything in the store you like, go ahead :)

It's mostly Planet Coaster and the "game extras" part of the shop at this point I'd imagine, and there's a prospect for very tasty RoI on JWE later this year :) Beyond looks like it could shape up to make a very robust foundation for another full-blown expansion next year too.

It's already funded. Frontier makes enough with sales of Planet Coaster and Elite Dangerous + DLC and got a big investment from Tencent recently. Jurassic World Evolution will sell like hot cakes (easily a million copies) because it'll launch and be promoted at the same time as the new Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom movie globally.

Elite Dangerous doesn't have expensive server parks, because it uses P2P with a few servers. That's why there's no monthly subscription and they keep more revenue for other stuff.

Frontier has enough cash reserves to keep developing Elite Dangerous for the next few years.

There will be new paid for DLCs which will segment player base. But new 'base game' will be Horizons.

Had not recognised there was no large monthly (virtual) server bill.

Possibly. Lets wait and see first. There has been nothing official about Horizons being the new base game.

Official no, but enough evidence to make educated guess.

Had not recognised there was no large monthly (virtual) server bill.

It uses quite a lot of servers alright, but they go up and down. When required new instances of servers are automatically spawned. When not used for some time, they are turned off. So basically they pay as much they actually need.

FD network model have quite a list of challenges to overcome to get better, but overall it is impressive tech from both IT and financial perspective.

now you know you can continue to enjoy the game, and sleep soundly at night

I was considering buying a skin for my shiny new Python and Fer De Lance soon. Every little bit helps!

They made a good product and haven't screwed with it or put in exploitative mechanics like so many have done. That makes me much more willing to open my wallet voluntarily.

That’s FD’s issue not mine.

But I think they are selling enough over-priced tat - sorry - game extras to cover it.

In fact, I suspect the store is now the main reason for ED’s continued existence.

Which is fair enough, business is business.
