Beyond the EXPANSIONS

As you say it is clear that the reward includes ANY expansions. So I hope that there will be further expansions, and the team have alluded to an ongoing development (evolution?) of E-D and it is this that excites me. In this respect there should be no need to wait for Elite 5 :)

Yeah totally agree, with Expansions released every 2/3 years there will be no need for Elite: Deadly

I just hope that the pledge included expansions are limited to the three main areas I put in the OP... any further expansions should be content rich enough to be charged for it?

I'd rather have my expansions free, as per the Kickstarter, and then depending on how wealthy I'm feeling, I might chuck some extra money in by purchasing vanity items, or something of the sort. At the end of the day, it will be much fewer than 10,000 people who are entitled to the expansions (probably more like six or seven thousand). If Elite sells two million copies, then that's less than half a percent they're losing out on.

Good point, considering the potential player base vs kickstarter pledgers at £80 tier, there will be plenty of dollarpounds rolling in... as you point out.

I guess my main wish is that major content (graphics updates) is added as per the OP...

I think from the wording of the Kickstarter any and all expansions would be free at that level. I.e. you will never HAVE to pay any more to play ED. They may offer other extras you WANT to pay for, but that'd be a different story.

I also hope that they're more frequent than 2 or 3 years as that is a pretty long time to wait for expansions. I'd say more like 12 - 18 months. :)

I imagine all the main expansions will be content rich enough to be charged for it, but I think that they will still be included in at reward - it was said by the team during the kickstarter that actually the value of that reward was well in excess of the value of the contribution required. Having said that, nothing stopping individuals continuing to contribute later on in various ways if they feel so inclined. In addition, I hope the quality and scale of the game will bring in a big market to buy these expansions if they have not invested here early like us.

Yeah, I guess 2/3 years is a bit steep, just thinking the WoW Expansions release schedule...

...although texture/graphics increases should come as part of the dedicated expansions and every year might be a bit tight for an overhaul?

I try not to think of WoW! :p ;)

Considering the development cycle of the main game, I think 12 - 18 months is doable... even if it's nearer the 18 month end of that. I think "modest and often" would keep me more interested than "big and rare".

:D me too ;)

I suppose 12-18 months is doable, depends if a FD have a dedicated team for it, while developing other projects for the new consoles?

To be honest does it really matter if a small minority get updates for free because they paid a bit more earlier?

I'm no lawyer but
Digital Download Pack. This includes a single digital download of the game, and any expansions, and all the other rewards above except those requiring physical delivery
does seem to imply ANY expansions, not just any that Frontier happen to have mentioned at the time. if it was meant to be limited, they should have specified.

I know a couple of indie companies got burned with similar wording about free updates and expansions, and after complaints from fans, decided that honouring what was said would be better in the long run. Some things are worth more than cash, things like reputation.

The only reliable figures I have are from the kickstarter site so don't include any people paying or upgrading via paypal, but it looks as if about a third of current backers would be eligible for the free upgrades, so that's around 7-8000 people.

The reason I backed at the level I did was to get future expansions for free (well, included in the original price actually, not free) I could have left it at £20.

so I for one would be pretty hacked off if they didn't live up to their word, it's already the most I've ever paid for a game, not everyone is made of money.

If you want to pay more then knock yourself out, no one's stopping you.

You mention WoW in the original post, something I haven't touched with a bargepole because of its money leeching tendencies..

I'm curious about what the "landing on planets" expansion will consist of. It's a gigantic task, isn't it? A bigger task than the main game even?

Ooh that's confusing you've both got the same avatar

We are both merely expressing our support for the Federation. On this occasion, unfortunately we are on opposing sides of the argument and this leads to your confusion. However, it also demonstrates that the Federation allows it's citizens to have a diverse range of views unlike the Empire.

Had to get that in to oppose the swathes of Imperial supporters in the forum:D. At some stage I'll probably change it for something more individual.

well David Braben has said time and time again he wants to do it right, and to be honest we don't know if he's already started working on it, we do know it won't be available on the 1st release but that's not to say they are not already working on it..... the scope of what he said he wants is huge though, he wants animals, trees basically a living breathing planet, cities ect. I hope they include weather, rain, snow, fog be a shame to have a persistently sunny world..........

Don't forget FD plan on releasing the game commercially. They'd be expecting unit sales of 500K+ I'd guess. 7-8K is a drop in the ocean in comparison and not an inappropriate reward for those that put in the commitment to make the game possible in the first place.

TBF, I suspect many of those pitching over £80 at the KS were doing so on the basis of purchasing E D and all its future incarnations/expansions. This was on the principle that their loyalty to get the game up and running at the earliest stage was being rewarded by Frontier in the long run.

Sure, non game changing fluff add-ons could possibly be introduced later for those players wishing to pay for them but I think the two should not be confused for what they are.

I highly doubt it.

Let's get ED out and running first ;)
No, no it's a reasonable assumption. Planetary landing's should have been in from the start. A lot of us "Frontier" players were really disappointed when he told us it won't make the initial release. Atmospheric flight and sometimes tricky landings due to high gravity was part of the fun in that game.
Walking around on planets though is a completely different story and one I highly doubt they're working on right now. I honestly struggle with understanding how they're going to make that part. It would be a massive expansion for sure.
