Biggest Tip I have learned when setting to explore the back garden

1600LY's out from the bubble, hundreds of planets, asteroids and big gas giants scanned, not an issue, couple of steamy moments when i got to close to a star when scooping and not slowing down fast enough, but fine, I had the shields to cope with it.

Mined a few ringed planets, actually got some new discoveries.

Thought I would go to make a coffee. Good they said, go make a coffee.

Got back. "Ship Destroyed". No other reason like I burned alive in the core of a hot sun (there was no one around for LY's so I was definitely alone).

Lost 2 days of voyaging and all my scans and cost me half a mil for my troubles to get my ship and start at the last base I visited.

Brutal. Just Brutal.

Dont even go for a crapper if you're running this game. Do it in a bucket next to your desk. Ignore the wife and kids. If you do have to leave, and I mean only if you're having a change of kidney, save the game first.

At least then you'll have a chance of continuing into the deep dark depths of the back garden.

I almost uninstalled and stamped on the game for being so brutal. But then I remembered, the others who came before me, lost a lot more (weeks of work) and paid a heavier price to restart.

Just save, dont walk away from the game. It knows. it senses that you're not there. Then you're dead.

If you're more than 200 ly outside of inhabited space, there will be no NPCs, so you can set your throttle to zero, then drop out of supercruise. Once your ship has stopped you can go do whatever nature dictates. ;) Probably best to get some distance from the nearest sun, though.

On the other hand, in human occupied space, yeah, you can't leave your ship alone for more than a couple of seconds.

I also got killed making a coffee, so I feel your pain.

last week the Pizza guy almost got me. I knew i SHOULD have just logged off but hey, it will only be a min right? got back to a NPC Pirate trying to kill me. lucky my shields were still up (one ring left) and i got the time to fight back. i didn't realize i had stuff in my cargo hold from missions....oops

I just left it, the offical word (some guy at frontier) said they cant get you if you drop out of SC, tell that to pilotless python, 3m rebuy, 1 mil in missoins, 2.5 mill in cargo and 40 PP tokens

Drop out of SC, stop and hold position. Log out of the game to main menu, do your business, log back in. Simple.

Firstly i'm sorry to hear about your bad luck and i wish Doc Brown would hurry up building/getting here in his time machine so you could use it to go back and rescue your ship :_ .
(Damn, how is the Doc more than 30 years late when he owns so many clocks AND a time machine?!... :) .)

I'm guessing if you're posting in this section of the forum you were playing on PS4, if you are and weren't aware of the following, the system is set up by default to capture the last 15 minutes of gameplay, both in game and footage from the system menu (provided you've had the system on 15 minutes and you haven't installed so much that your system has too little available harddrive space to create the file, up to 700mb+ for a full 15 minute capture file).

You are playing on PS4 and weren't aware of its' built in standard capture feature, using it shouldn't be too hard to figure out, but if you're a total technphobe, i can link you to detailed guide on capturing and uploading PS4 videos, i left someone else in another thread recently.
If you're an X Box 1 or PC player just posting here because this section of the forum is the busiest since this version of the game's launch, the XB1 has the same sort of built in capture feature, while its' also possible while playing PC games, though it requires a tiny bit more effort to capture footage, using either third party programmes like Fraps and/or with dedicated video capture devices.

If you're well aware of this system and others capture features and how to use them and just didn't even think to capture this particular footage to see what hell just happened when you came back to find your ship destroyed, here's me reminding you to capture the footage of ANYTHING of interest that happens in your games... either just for your own analysis or to post it online :) .

It takes like 2 seconds to log out to main menu. The game just picks up where you left off when you log back in. Nothing brutal about it, just don't afk while in a corona of a star or flying towards one :)

You can afk whislt scooping, just be at the edge of the scoop range ie its not scooping at max, zero the throttle, release head lock and bobs your uncle.

Im not saying this is a good thing to do, but I do it, also if anything is over 50k ly and I want to scan it, and then think I need coffee or a bio I line up just off to one side make haste at slow speeds.

I afk a lot and have thus far never come bk to the rebuy screen, theres just nothing in system whislt in SC that can kill...

Famous last words.. :)

Ohh and point of note; shileds wont protect you from stars, heat is heat, they do help tho if you bodge a landning on a high G planet or smack into a mega ship like me yesterday, lost some hull and chiped The Zurara's paint

I've gone afk while exploring countless times. Just, you know, make sure the ship isn't moving in any direction (or set it to supercruise out into the void, away from any stellar bodies).

I completely forgot about the ingame-recording. Will remember that IF it happens again. I intend to be more vigilant.

Im back out there again, about 100LY out of the bubble and going up. I intend to do the full galaxy, anti-clockwise and then off to the centre before heading back and claiming all those lovely credits. If I survive. I will record my journey, in screenshots and video and if there is anything interesting, then I will pop it up.

Thats what Im doing now. Getting out of cruise, slowing down and aiming it into deep space. Im not having that happen again, I really almost - almost thought about not playing again but I love Elite, am an original-favourite so I know its a beast when it comes to being "lazy" I just thought I would get away with it but didn't

So what actually killed you? AFK while scooping or AFK while mining?
