Half the point is "winning", although that is nebulous with Elite as it's pretty open ended and evolving. The OTHER half is playing. If you just get a billion in with no or little effort, you may consider you have "won", but you haven't played and experienced the real game. You won't value anything you buy as you didn't really earn it, and it won't be as much fun, or last very long before you are bored. You will still be a mediocre pilot at best if you didn't learn your skills the hard way, and it's not worth it. I want to really curse the loss of a ship, to enjoy having finally earned something awesome. Take care, learn the skills. Explore. be part of the universe, not just drop in and "win", then feel bored.
I do agree that you might as well just not play. I found that dev issue where you sold cargo and it reappeared. After the second sell I realised it was a bug and stopped and reported it. Yes, I could have become a hollow billionaire - quite a few people did, and I think honestly that they were fools. What was the point? I want to enjoy playing the game.
Give it a try. You'll value what you earn a whole lot more. Promise.
