Bindings weirdness

I've been playing ED on and off for many years and just returned after a two-year hiatus to see how things were going here. I downloaded the latest version to my PC and went through the process of designing a bindings layout and entered them in the system. I completed the process, saved my last work and did the first tutorial on flatscreen so I could get familiar and memorize the bindings before heading into VR. I then took a break for several hours came back and decided to repeat the tutorial to ingrain all those bindings in my head.

And to my dismay the custom file that I had created and saved several hours earlier was not intact. Some of the bindings had changed and some of them had not. There were no updates that could have destroyed the bindings file and I didnt switch any USB inputs from my HOTAS. After spending lots of time doing the entry {because at 70 years old my eyes ain't what they used to be) I was so frustrated I just deleted the game completely which I do regret. Before I go through the process again I would like to find out what you guys think may have happened and how I can avoid it in the future. Thanks for your help.

not sure what you did exactly but follow this to the letter and you wont go far wrong your custom file may even still be there
i have a suspicion adding vr later put a spanner in the works but i am speculating now

I wonder if using a 4 input USB bus with both my CH fighter stick and pro throttle plugged into it could create issues. In future I will use the bus for my mouse and keyboards and use two separate dedicated computer USB inputs for each HOTAS controller.

Interesting. However our circumstances sound quite different. After configuring the bindings I did turn the game off but the computer remained on and the peripherals plugged into the USB bus were not touched. So nothing really changed in regards to the flight stick and pro throttle. I'm gonna try it one more time and save the bindings file as suggested above and hope for the best.

So I have redone my bindings file and saved them. I also now have plugged my fighter stick and pro throttle into dedicated USB port on the computer and not using the USB hub anymore. I searched in the app data area and found the binding file with some old and some new files shown here. First question, do I need to change or delete any of these files so ED just sees the new one I created? And secondarily I want to create a back up. Do I need to rename the back up file since I will be placing it on my desktop for easy access when needed

From this image, you seem to have two sets of bindings - one for Horizons (the 3.0 binds) and on for Osyssey (the 4.1 binds). Your issue might have been caused by logging into both Horizons (also known as Legacy) and Odyssey (known as Live).

ok follow the 3 step guide and rename the 4.1.binds file as instructed
if followed correctly your file structure will look like this you will not need a 3.0 bind file thats for older version of the game
so you will have 1 renamed 4.1 file and its contents renamed
and 1 startpreset4start file with its contents renamed
and no other files present
after backup the folder as instructed
do not rename them custom as that is the same name is it not?:ROFLMAO:if you rename something it usually means it will have a different name🤷‍♂️
(the giude is stuck to the top of this pc subforum with good reason and has over 60 likes)
still if you are more comfortable using the video guide then do that..............

When you go to options/controls in the game be careful that you let it load to the 4 control screens (general,Ship,SRV,On Foot) as mine wigged out once when I got in too much of a hurry and clicked into the general tab before the binding file loaded to it. Not sure if that causes a problem as I don't want to try it again. But something happened and I lost my bindings but luckily I keep a folder copy of the bindings always on desktop for reloading. Just get in the habit of anytime you make changes to your bindings you copy that folder again to the desktop after shutting down game. I use a lot of devices in that one file as I have a throttle, stick, gamepad, keyboard, gameglass on an ipad, etc. The Binding tools for this game have always been a chore.

Now that you mention it, I also was to hasty clicking on those tabs before the loading was completed. After rebuilding the bindings, the first thing I did was copy the folder to the desktop, which seems the most effective and simple approach for avoiding calamity.

Well after troubleshooting and battling with elite dangerous I finally got all the bindings to work. But I realized something. Even though I've have more than 500 hours in this game over the past five years on and off, I realized that I really wasn't having much fun and it was more of a task than a game. I had had my fun working up to elite dangerous level in the past but it dawned on me I really didn't want to go through that again. It's a wonderful VR experience but I've been there done that. So I'm gonna pass on the grinding and the necessary memorization of controls. No more ED for me. Time to have fun in VR!

Why even bother to rename the file if the current naming convention works?
(as per title hassle free) because patches have changed things in the past and renaming prevents that but as that no longer apples to you anymore it is
kinda irrelevant..........

I seem to remember something about not plugging some controllers in usb 3.0 sockets but using usb 2.0 one instead. I’m no computer expert, just passing on advice I was given here years back, ED in VR though, superb!
