Hardware & Technical BIOS flash on s2011 - can anyone lend a cpu ?

i know this is cheeky but after 3 weeks of constant messing about , from the suplyer , i now have my new rig. unfortunatly the mobo's bios dosn't recognise the cpu (i7-4930k) due to outdated bios.

i could continue to wait for the suplyer to 'fix' the problem, which would most likely involve sending the mobo to the suplyer who would test that it never worked (3-5 days) , then send it to msi to get the flash done (3-12 weeks), back to suplyer , back to me - alpha and beta missed. yet it is only a quick job (3 hours tops , and i an being very generous).

so i am wondering if anyone has a spare (or temporairaly spare) cpu i could 'borrow' to do this. admitedly i dont know which chips will work, other than the older the generation the better.

the mobo is an MSI , model X79A-GD65 (8D)
here is the mobo's compatable cpu list
also i have added colour for ease of compatableity by bios
V1.0 so will definatly work
1.4 probably will work
1.5 should work
1.6 might work
1.8 unlikly to work
4.3+ not working , i got one of these

I7 cpu
4960x , 4930k , 4820k , 3970x , 3960x stepping c1 , 3960x stepping c2 , 3930k step c1 , 3930k step c2 , 3820

xeon cpu
e5 2697v2 , e5 2690 , e5 2687w , e5 2680 , e5 2670 , e5 2660 , e5 2650L , e5 2650 , e5 2643 , e5 2630 , e5 2620 , e5 1650 , e5 1620

post in thread or send a pm , please !

that sounds like a real pain in the neck, almost had the same problem when i bought my games rig but i spotted that the board would need a bios update to take the chip i wanted and so was able to get the supplier to flash the bios for me before dispatch for a tenner.

are there no local PC shops who could help you out by flashing it for you?

Which MSI motherboard is it? I thought the MSI boards were flashable without CPU but with PSU

+1 iirc all you need to do is insert a USB drive with the bios upgrade on it and hold f11 at power on

It's been a long time since I had an MSI board, but a quick google should give you the correct method.

yes , well kind of. you have to set the bios up to do it (as far as i can work out). so if you have had a working chip in no problem , but they (stupidly) dont ship one of the 2xBIOS's with that as a default setting.

msi has only 3 boards that purports this processor.
witch one do you have?
I can,t help you with the CPU.
but can help trouble shooting.

oh i was told by one of their tech's ''yes this is 100% compatible, our mobo's are updated and run those chips from stock'' . i am a 'tad' miffed  now.

as far as the suplyer charging you to update their out of date stock is concerned . . . not sure , but i think they shouldn't be allowed (legaly) to do that (and charge)

I can only find 8D.
I suggest you swap it for that version.
or give it back and order some where else.

yes sorry typo (8D)

its been 3 weeks since the mobo was ordered (just over 2 since i got that part), despite not having been able to use it (because of them) they wont replase under statutes for 'not fit for purpose'

You might get more responses to your request if I move it to the hardware section of the forum. Would you like me to move it for you?

I'd be very miffed as they've sold you something that was not 'as described' and therefore not fit for the purpose it was advertised for

depends on the description it's sold under, this was specifically listed as able to take the 8 core CPU i wanted AFTER the bios had been updated. besides i have never bought a mobo that didnt come with a V1 bios

its not the cheapest one either.
by the looks of is you have the parts right.
so you shouldn't have these problems.
does this board have two bioses?
I think so , as it is an overclock board.
have you tried the second one?
there should be a switch.
probably same as my msi board has.

and then they procrastinated till the time for such a return had expired , i supose i could take them to court to force reembersment , but that would be 12-36 months awaiting a hearing

as i spent about 3 hours finalizing my order on the phone with one of their techs . . . .

besides i have never bought a mobo that didnt come with a V1 bios

from my time with pc's and building them (which is how i made an independent living after university from 91~99) i have never before had a mobo not suport a cpu due to 2 yr out of date bios . that incluede the emergance of 100mhz fsb back in the mid 90's, where the problem was actualy the other way round in that the bios and cpu were 100mhz compatible but several of the earlyest boards where relabled 66mhz boards (gigabyte's famous apology and recall for example). sorry drifted a bit , back OT . this board has been shipped with at least 3 bios versions , or at least easy to see version points. looking at the bios chips they are either blank (oldest) , have a red/orange dot sticker (mid age , with the colour defineing which production plant) or a green sticker with version written on it (could cover more than one version).

incidently the board in the vid-link (see post above this one) is indeed the same board , with the green sticker.
