Tried again (after a 2 hour break playing ETS2), getting to the same stage as before. The error pops up quicker though. I don't know if that's a good or a bad thing.

Maybe not being able to purchase an FC is a classic Rowan Atkinson-type comedy attempt by FDev.

I’m trying to figure it out- how to plot a course for it, whether I need to be on it or not in order to send it somewhere, whether I need to buy cargo holds for Tritium etc. I just now figured out where it was! I didn’t play the beta so these are my very first moments of ownership and I’m still figuring it out- ok with you ?

This launch is worse than the release of BETA 1, I recommend nobody logs in cause you can end up paying billions and not actually receiving a carrier.
