Black Ops Hit: Eliminate Gen. Morrison

I got the mission Black Ops Hit: Eliminate Gen. North... same mission, I suppose. Can I take that guy in a fairly basic Viper with burst lasers, if he's in a Federal Dropship?

Maybe. He's pretty tough for a drop ship, and is fairly armored. So depends on your skill I guess.
It depends on your framerate as funny as it may sound :) It's a bug. So if you want the challenge turn on vsync or other frame limiter.

Yeah it's a black Ops mission. Plausible deniability and all that.

The idea being that you're meant to be committing an illegal act but getting away with it.

I took this mission from the Federation in order to increase in rank. When I found Gen. Morrison he was in a dropship and unloaded on me. After getting hit a few times and using a KWS on him, I shot back... only to immediately receive a 200CR bounty on my head and wanted status with the very people who sent me to kill him.

The reputation system in this game is way over my head apparently.

I apologise but this does not answer your question, as I have one of my own? How did you find the general in the first place? I take these missions, fly to the system, nav beacons, stations etc etc, bounty hunt while I'm waiting but never get to see the general I am supposed to kill?

I got this mission as well but I've been checking Unidentified Signal Sources for like an hour now and no sign of the target! Any suggestions? Is there some particular piece of equipment I need in order to detect him?

Dropping into USS is the correct method + a bit of luck. I fought him 3 times when I did find him - he kept going into SC when his hull was low.

I have only hit the 3rd Navy rank and I currently have 3 missions to kill a general. Why am I sent against these tough ships at such a low rank?

If we're all in the same Galaxy (albeit different instances at times) why would several people be getting the same mission ?
Or, to put it in a better way; kill order goes out for General North, plenty of bounty hunters take up the offer which is fine but only one can really bag the money with an assassination. Can't kill the same mark over and over surely.

You've never played an MMO before have you :)

I'm doing the same mission here, and I can't find him anymore. I fought him once but accidentaly jumped in supercruise. Now been searching for 2 hours straight, and he is not in unidentified, weak nor strong signal sources. Some one please help.

What's even more fun is when you get multiple missions to kill one target, and they pop back up in the next system you visit. Poor guy probably felt like he was being griefed :D

My #1 suggestion is to shoot (once) anyone who tries to talk you out of the mission, or attempts to convince you to switch targets. If they complete their conversation and update your mission before you've found the person who tells you exactly which system they are in, you've got yourself a forked mission that is very unlikely to allow you to find your target.

No additional equipment is needed to locate.
