Black Screen of Death: Unable to create a 3D-accelerated display device

I get the following message after the "Login with Steam" screen and the "Elite Dangerous Play" screen:

System Error
Unable to create a 3D-accelerated display device
Please check your display drivers
[Abort]

And then a persisting, non-exiting, "Black Screen of Death".

I was able to play yesterday after the "Trailblazers Update 3".

I noticed a brief download in Steam before the game started today.

Copy the error message and paste for a search as there are multiple reasons this could be happening. There is even a previous thread here in the forums about this issue in 2023.

Check this thread..."No 3d Accelerated Display Mode Available" (January 2023)

Need pc/graphics card specs to troubleshoot.

It's not an uncommon issue. Seems the computer reverts back to a basic internal graphics and not your graphics card...maybe.

pebkac error🤷‍♂️
why bother posting if your not going to provide basic pc specs that are generally required for anyone to be able to offer assistance and recommend a possible solution to the problem?

So, my logic is that neither my graphics card nor my graphics card drivers have changed since Elite Dangerous was working. That is, Elite Dangerous has worked with my current graphics card and current graphics card drivers, but now it is not; something has changed, but it is neither of those two things.

I see that you are on Linux.

This is a Proton issue - something that was not clear from your post. It also explains the "brief" download mentioned in your initial post - Steam does this often with games running under Proton.

Game updates will often break Proton compatibility, and the devs of Elite: Dangerous don't test their updates against Wine.

Try switching Proton versions: Main menu > Compatibility > Choose a different version from the "Run other titles with" dropdown.

Alternatively, you can download different Proton versions through ProtonUp-Qt, which is available on Flathub. ProtonUp-Qt also allows you to download custom Proton versions, such as those by Glorious Eggroll.

The latest reports on the game at protondb suggest that Proton 9.0-4 works. You should be able to find a working version through some trial and error if this does not resolve your problem. You might want to update your kernel and your Mesa version too - they're rather old. Are you on Debian or an LTS Ubuntu?

Thanks for that. Proton 9.0-4 is the ticket (I'm on Debian 12).

I now going to let Steam know how well they have done...
