Black screen Rift CV1

Hello All,

I recently get black screens when using my Rift CV1.
Till yesterday it never occurred; after the screen goes black it reappears
in 2 or 3 seconds. I still do hear the sound of the game.
The time interval between the black screens looks random.
There was no upgrade whatsoever nor changing of usb ports.
I am using a palit 1080.
The monitor don't show any blackout so I think it's Oculus related.
Fiddling the Rift cable makes no difference.

I did reconnect the Rift cable and usb cables.
Restarted the computer and the oculus program.

Any thought's ?

Is it only happening in Elite: Dangerous, or does it occur in other games. You might want to contact Oculus. I have an issue with no sound from one speaker, and they are responding well.

It occurs in oculus home also.
Maybe I have to contact Oculus Servicecenter.

The missing sound from one speaker I get resolved by updating my soundcart.

I have had issues with my previous Rift, and Oculus asked me to do a few checks, and then agreed to replace it. It took about 10 days from me dropping it off at the courier to getting a new replacement. It was not the soundcard, as tapping the headset sometimes brought the sound back. Unfortunately the replacement unit is now doing the same about 6 months after I got it, and Oculus customer care are being professional about it.

I used to get black screen drop outs every so often till I upgraded the rest of my PC (had a 5 year old PC with a 1080) but if you haven't had any hardware changes it seems unlikely, did the graphics driver update?

As Hell Razor5543 say's check other games as well, if it's an issue with the cable/HMD then it'll be across the board. I did have a dead cable myself - worked for a few days then died completely - Oculus support needed a load of log files but sent a replacement cable for free fairly quickly and were extremely helpful throughout.

EDIT - Ninja'd again :D

Hi, thanks for responding.

My rig is a Z170 with i7 6700K on 4.00 Ghz not OC
16 gig Ram, windows 10 prof.
2 oculus sensors on the 3.0 usb ports MB
CV1 also straight into the 3.0 usb MB.
Palit GTX1080 not OC
All the latest drivers installed with Driver Booster 3.3 pro.

Never ever till now any problems.

I have placed a ticket at the Oculus Support.

Let's see how good Oculus support is

Well, first I would check cable connections. But not the obvious ones at the PC, but the one on the headset. You can easily pull off the part with the foam from the HMD, and underneath it there is the cable, which connects with a HDMI connector. It is possible that it comes loose from time to time, check it out, before you send it back.

Hi, thank you for your idea's.

It seems there is a little bend in the cable where the cable first entered the headset.
Maybe due to the weight of the cable or some force when moving around when standing up.
I have put some tape on it and the black screens seems to occur less.
Awaiting the response from Oculus support-center.

Ive been having intermittent black screen issues, & I've unplugged the oculus lead from the headset as mentioned and cleaned out the plug in the headset with some canned air I have around then I had a bit of a brain wave, I looked at the cable & saw that it passed through a little guide on the side of the head strap, But I also realised that the cable was free to pass through this guide freely, & I think the reason for the intermittent black screen issue is due to the weight of the cable moving the socket in the headset, so I deduced that I needed to resolve the issue of the weight of the cable acting on the headset connection, by simply giving some slack to the connection and adding an addition anchor point to the cable which will not allow the cable to act on the connection, hopefully curing the issue. I will update if successful

If your cable is routed up and over the top of the headband side arm to the little plastic thing, route it down and under the earpiece then upto the little plastic thing.
Stops it snagging when the headset is stretched on its elasticated straps and thus doesn't stress the cable joints so much.

Are you on public test beta release Oculus Home or Stable Release Oculus Home?

I had a blackout issue start for me after a latest PTB Release update over this past weekend. Blackout on Rift from ED from start but could hear sound. Went back to the stable release & problem was solved.

I'm also having this issue since getting the new beta release. If I start it from the launcher instead of through Oculus home it works though.

Hello all,

It turns out the rift was send back to oculus support and a new one was
returned to me within 1 (one) week [yesnod].

I think weight of the cable has done some damage to the cable at the point
where the cable enters the clip at the "band" of the headset.

No more (other) issues when using the new headset.
