Blocking feature being abused or was it intended to be this way? FDEV?

NO NO , my interpretation is just fine.

That is how I read it... That is how many people will have read it.. and that is where FDEV needs to actually confirm what they actually mean or didn't mean.... Its still on the Website now and you can imagine that if the PS4 people stick around long enough, they too might join in on these threads and rehash the arguments we have had for the last two years.

59 pages of hyperbole, highlight sections take out of complete text and then misquoted..... All while FDEV who have to be aware of this thread, do their usually terrible job of community interaction. Completely ignore it while posting in other threads...

Standard practice....

But hey... Thargoids right... Those cutscenes are really bringing the game to life!

So much content! I am not sure how the new players contain themselves.

Anyone also noticed how terrible instancing and blue tunnelling in Open is these days?
I wonder if 10'000+ different match player configurations has anything to do with it. I'm sure it doesn't... Well Pretty sure...... mmmaybe though..... You think?

For encounters with other pilots to be unpredictable does not preclude the ability of players to control who they play with. While accurate, your quote does not argue in favor of the premise that the blocking feature is being "misused". On the other hand, "you can control who you play with" does definitively answer the presumably rhetorical question you posed in the thread title. Yes, it was meant to be this way.

Couldn't agree more... Which is why I was hoping maybe.. just this once, FDEV would give a straight answer..

Still, this (rather vague) descrpition is perfectly compatible with the current state of things. There is no way PvPers can complain that the block feature betrays the spirit of the game.

Sorry DaveB, the text I highlighted reads differently and that is the game this thread is playing.

Also... Going back to my opening post. Still waiting for FDEV to confirm. So your opinion on the matter is as worthless as mine, until they do.

IIRC they already said that blocking is working as inteneded when they released it.

Wow the level of misreading to suit a narrative on this threat is overwhelming.

They are clearly referring to groups when they talk about playing with your select friends.

If you don't get that from that text, maybe wipe away some of the salt and read it again.

Also seeing as in the kick-starter they talked about an offline mode... Which ... Anyone... anyone seen that? No??

Well... if not all the kickstarter is true or relevant to todays game... Can we all pick and chose phrases, place them out of context and all rub each other in agreement?

Now my favourite one for normal people, who bought Elite from the Elite Dangerous website. Would have read the following

Experience unpredictable encounters with players from around the world in Elite Dangerous' vast massively multiplayer space. Fly alone or with friends in a connected galaxy where every pilot you face could become a trusted ally or your deadliest enemy. ( Pilot could of course refer to NPC if you completely ignore the context of the paragraph in which it was placed )

Now I too have highlighted text which unless you want to be so obtuse about it that you become a living meme. Very much points to PVP.

I thank you.

Great highlights, apart from you've included in your post the very thing that shows PvP was never the aim of the marketing.
It was advertised with "Offline Mode".... tell me, when your offline, how do you reconcile "where every pilot you face could become a trusted ally or your deadliest enemy." with your assumption that everything you shoot will be human? While not being connected to the internet.

You also forgot to mention Solo Mode, so again I will ask;
How do you reconcile "where every pilot you face could become a trusted ally or your deadliest enemy." when playing alone?

You want to say my interpretation is wrong, yet mine is the one that takes Solo (and Offline when it was advertised) into consideration when defining what the game is and completely ignored "you will be able to control who else you might encounter in your game".

The fault isn't with Frontier, they gave more than enough information out in Kickstarter for people to understand that the focus of the game is not PvP combat.
Even BDOBE has stated that he sees it as a co-op game.

You made a bad assumption.

you will be able to control who else you might encounter in your game" - [/B][/B][/B]right there, in plain English.

While you are interpreting this statement as being able to control who you want to play with in game to exclude those you don't, if true and plain English as you say those you don't want to play with would also be able to decide that they want to play the game with you there and control that.

So plain English? No. If I decided I wanted to exercise my control to encounter you, but you decided to exercise your control not to encounter me, for one of us this statement would be false.

I've always interpreted it as referring to modes, we can choose solo, friends (or like minded people for Mobius etc.) or everybody. That's the choice.

I play all 3 modes (and various PGs) depending on what I am doing and my mood. The only restriction I place on myself is that if helping or hindering other players by intent I play in their chosen mode. Otherwise it just depends on how I feel and what other distractions exist in RL at the time.

That is enough choice for me, but as my blocked list has 1 Mobius invading PvP player on it and nobody else I accept anything in open.

I might block more undesirables if I meet any, but just attacking me isn't enough for that and the potential that a person may attack would never be enough.

I have to say that I did not interpret the statement that way. Since the statements "I wanted to exercise my control to encounter you" and "you decided to exercise your control not to encounter me" are mutually exclusive I interpreted the FD statement to mean that I could choose to limit the commanders with whom I could play. Now I chose to limit that to no-one and play in Solo, but the friend and block lists are perfectly acceptable alternatives as far as I can see and fully within the spirit of the game.

But that's just me.

I will concede 1 point here. I accept its an issue and not sure i have an answer.

say i blocked jockey on my list (Ihope he does not mind me putting him in my hypothetical)

and say i was in an instance with harlequin.....

from what some have said here (i have not tested so i dunno but if true i get why some think its an issue) it would mean that essentially, whilst harlequin is in an instance with me, (s)he would also in effect be blocked from Jockey.

i am not sure how to fix that really... possibly in this instance then i should be forcibly removed from the instance, after all it is my choice to not have Jockey in my instance, not HQs...

on the other hand, what if HQ is in the process of pirating me? all HQ sees is me disconnect from the game as Jockey comes into the instance.

over all, imo the lesser of the 2 evils is having the block list, after all it was an advertised feature.

but i admit I CAN see it from the eyes of other players on this 1 part..... if i have a massive blocklist, it can have a side effect of affecting other peoples games other than just mine, or those on my blocklist.

It does also have the effect that you get matched with commanders that you might not have previously encountered due to the "limiting" of players with block lists.

Nothing's going to work perfectly here though and everything is open to some form of abuse. Rights and wrongs on both sides of the argument.

All FDev can do is provide choice and action abuse. Will make it more complicated and likely to go wrong, but unless they had parallel game worlds which wouldn't work for ED there will always be complaints from both sides, which is fairer than complaints from just 1 side.

Had to laugh at Mike placing me as a pirate, never even done that to an NPC yet. Quicker ways to make money and don't see many people in my normal profession of exploration. Have to buy myself an eyepatch now. :)

Your words are entirely worthless, just like mine. Your hyperbole is just as grand.

Its weird how you cannot take PVP from a statement that is about other players being your enemy and have to grasp at they were implying that particular part was reference to NPCs Because the term "massively multiplayer" and "solo" are so akin in their likeness ( Oh but BGS blah blah blah )... Really weird.... You are happy thou to not worry about entire mode removal because.. you know that might make the rest of what was said around that time a bit flaky too.

But that's ok.. because you just cannot help some people.... Some people even believe in God and well... you know what those people are capable of.

I've seen your comments on the Hotel California thread and well..... lets just leave it at that....

Instancing.
Friend lists, wings used to saturate an instance…

The effect of blocking players is just exaggerated because it has a mildly annoying effect on a certain type of players. Using the instancing system to their own advantage and they don't complain. They just complain about others using it for their (perceived) advantage.

Yes because that's much the same thing......

.

just take the emphasis off and read the thread again trying to come at it from an impartial view.

tell me where does it state that "pilots" = players?

ED is multiplayer, in all modes, inso far as the BGS in involved (many would say they wish it were not).

dont get me wrong, i have made many assumptions based on FDs marketing..... and have often been dissapointed, so you are not alone in that sense.

but generally - with a few exceptions - IF you read what FD write objectively, whilst a lot of what they do is very much at the lowest most simplest basic form of what they say, usually they DO deliver precisely what they promise.

and i would say this is the case with the above paragraph.

is the game massive (check)
is it multiplayer (check)
can every pilot in the game potentially be an ally or an enemy (check)
can you potentially hunt and be hunted by other players (check! - they never said ALL players)

as i said, dont get me wrong, i have fallen foul of their marketting too... i saw the horizons trailer and thought i too would be able to do all that stuff even if solo, but that was my mistake, no where did FD state it was possible outside of contrived multiplayer experiences.

the launch trailer which was cgi stated it was not ingame content..

so the only time FD have out and out miss sold the game that i can think of was when they showed multicrew using an srv in the trailer.

I'm surprised to see this thread got this long and no FDev response yet.

I will not read 60 pages but i can tell you this was one of the reasons that made me quit playing.

No, no one blocked me but i don't like the mentality/design of a developer/game that does this (among other things).

But i understand it from an economical point of view, FDev wants to keep some of their customers happy.

I thank you.

So ye bought a game that ye have infinite freedom in...cool...so does everyone else who bought the game. Yer free to not play certain aspects or certain players, can block them if they dont feel the same. Ye cant assume yer free to do whatever ye want and then expect others not to have the same freeddm of choice...if ye do then yer being hypocritical in expecting total freedom yerself.

Of course, if yer just gonna selectivey read a few lines and take them to new literal heights, thats fine...thing is so can everyone else because they have the same choices and freedoms you have. But thats the problem isnt it? Their freedom and choices could affect your game as much as your freedom and choices affect theirs.

Yer no more right or wrong than anyone else who uses block functions...anyone using it is excercizing their freedom to choose who they instance with so you want your total freedom while restricting the choices of others...so what exactly makes you such a special little snowflake? Why should your freedoms and choices impede on anyone elses game? Would ye rather players go to solo or pg simply to avoid one or two morons who behave like morons and play like morons?

Its working exactly as intended...sorry if thats an issue but yer free to block or not block anyone ye like or dont like...just like everybody else. So if ye dont wanna get blocked, stop acting like a bollox...its not rocket science is it?

Of course, yer still free to act like a bollox, but others are also free to block ye...thats called "consequences"

But abused? Thats a theory at best...just like suggesting its your connection thats at fault...thats a theory too. Good luck with getting an answer from the devs on something that very few even consider an issue. Might be an issue in yer mind, but I can assure ye, yer in a minority echo chamber here with this one ^

Lets break this down without any bias.

"Experience unpredictable encounters with players from around the world in Elite Dangerous' vast massively multiplayer space."
You can meet players from around the world who behave in unpredictable ways. Points to PvP and PwP.

"Fly alone or with friends in a connected galaxy"
You can opt to fly solo, or alone in a Private Group or in Open. PvE/PwP
Alternatively you can fly with friends in a Private Group or in Open. PvE/PwP

"where every pilot you face could become a trusted ally or your deadliest enemy. "
Every pilot (NPC or player not specified) could be part of either a PvP, PvE or PwP or even PwE experience.

Conclusion Elite : Dangerous is a P(v/w)(P/E) game. It's an every flavour is accounted for all you can eat buffet.
