Blocking other players

Hi Commanders,

AFAIK, blocking another player will make it that you will never meet him again in-game.

What about the below scenario?
  • cmdr A is a ganker (pls, don't judge him)
  • cmdr B loves gankers and has never blocked anybody
  • cmdr C blocks cmdr A
  • cmdr B and C are now in the same instance (maybe C is friend with one of B's friends, which increased the chance to all end up in the same instance)
=> cmdr B will never meet A today :-/

I was hunting for gankers last night at the CG, and noticed lots of other commanders in SC doing the same, and LOTS of non-gankers in the RES's.
After more than 2 hours, I met exactly 2 gankers...pretty unusual low gankers/hour profit, especially for a Saturday at a CG...
I also noticed a "PvPeer" friend of mine in the same system the entire time, as per the galaxy map, but never saw him.

Thoughts?
My finger was almost itching me to switch to the dark side...

No.

It drastically reduces the chance that you will be instanced with them, but it does not guarantee you won't. Also the Friends list is more powerful and can override the block list. If Cmdrs A and B are friends and B and C are instanced together, if A jumps into the area they will be instance matched if possible.

You could also not be connectabe. Which screws up p2p
For sure I had connection issues, like everybody else laterly, I believe.
But it was literally a ganker's paradise yesterday. LOTS of fat Corvettes, new Corsairs, weak Anacondas, P2's shooting fish in a barrel at the RES's. Can't believe there were not more gankers than I could meet.

Connection issues are not the same as being unconnectable or not

Thanks for the clarification!
Stills scratching my head to no avail as why my plate remained empty yesterday...

Mind to elaborate?
Anything I could do/try to improve my connectability?
I have port forwarding enabled, although use only IPv4 (not really sure IPv6 would matter), and a good Internet connection speed.

Perhaps lots of combat ships aren’t the right bait, maybe they were looking for tastier cargo.

Nah, PvP piracy is (sadly) only a tiny percentage of it.
Gankers want booms.
These commanders playing PvE optimized builds at the RES's are more than enough tasty...I mean, if I were a ganker, they would be...and some must like kicking the ant nest when the ants are unaware of the danger looming above them.

I still believe I ended up in the wrong instances, I will give it another try tonight.

i dont bother blocking the ones who want to destroy other players because they can.if i get pulled by one of those, its my mistake not spotting them on scanner, which i normaly do .i just let go of my controls lean back and drink my coffee/beer and let them get on with it,they can put a feather in there cap for destroying a ship that just sits there while its commander has a drink.lol i lose nothing . credits dont mean a thing to me anymore.and i never used the G word lol.

Usually in Elite you meet other players on an individual basis and block (on both sides) just decides whether you instance with them or not, as required.

In busy places the scenario you describe can happen. Then block functions as a majority-voting method to exclude unliked players. Opinions will vary but I think that's a useful outcome, improving the game experience for most participants. With P2P architecture an instancing solution which would satisfy everyone doesn't exist.

My recent experience of this issue was towards the end of the Thargoid war, when we were making ad-hoc wings in Open to fight Hydras. If a ganker turned up he could wreck the whole scenario for everyone, but as long as he'd been added to someone's block list he wouldn't turn up. It was very noticeable (from my POV) that ganking dwindled and stopped over a few weeks as people refined their lists, letting AX fun continue uninterrupted.

Edit: it's worth noting that in busy places there are usually multiple active Open instances, and you can't control which one you find yourself in. In one AX zone I got disconnected with a coloured snake error. I immediately relogged and joined a completely different group of people with the scenario at a different stage. Just relogging might let you find a different set of people at the CG.

Instancing is somewhat flaky in the game. Blocking, as you suspect, is like kicking it while it's already down. Your basic logic is there, even if the relative strength of effect has been questioned. I don't think friend list is as strong as a block, normally as I understand it the stronger effect of being in a team can overcome blocking, though. Among those who would like unfettered instancing, it's considered bad form to block because it obviously damages the ability of others (gankers or otherwise) to instance naturally. It's a bit like littering, tbh. Some people are really triggered by it, others just roll their eyes and carry on in an imperfect world, resolving not to litter themselves.
