Blocking the mail slot is a death penalty?

What gives with this? Ok, they destroy your ship. Then a maintenance crew has to come out and sweep the debris away. Wouldn't it be more effective and generate a bit of revenue for them to send a tug to tow you out and then assess a 1000cr fine. You know, to pay for the crew and take a bit for their coffers? Same way if you're blocking a landing pad. Sure you're a hazard if you're blocking a pad you're not assigned to, but if they destroy your ship then all that debris is a hazard too. And in a lot more places than just over the pad you were blocking.

.... waiting for a tug could introduce all sorts of shenanigans whereby players who have 5 minutes to leave the station (before similar destruction) would not be able to leave because another player got "stuck" in the toast-rack.

Intentionally blocking the slot to trap and destroy unwary CMDR's is an exploit used by psycho players in disposable ships.

Hence the draconian port defense response.

It creates jobs, plus it deters others pilots.

Think of it as a reset your ship position...

You look like you are stuck in the mail slot... allow us to assist you...

The death penalty is there for the same reason it's there for blocking landing pads, it's considered player harassment to deny other players from accessing the games features, such as the station or a landing pad. So, instead of wasting resources designing some silly tugboat to drag you away, it's easier just to make you a target and let the game do the rest.

What are you doing blocking the mail slot in the first place? You have no business being there apart from passing through, and you dying for being a schweinhund is a perfectly acceptable response, IMHO. ;)

No it would not be more effective.
They do not have to sweep the debris away. The debris just dissolves after some time, or disappears as soon as humans leave the area.
And they do not need the revenue of fines at all, because they do not exist.

Perhaps we get a more sophisticated mechanic in the future, or perhaps not. :)

Schweinhund. Always loved that word. Pig dog for those who don't know German. Which I don't but then we always learn the bad words first :D

I'm all for an almighty boot being deployed and punting the ship out of the slot.

Although saying that, I think I would then spend most of my time hanging around in the slot and laughing my bits off.

Having gotten wedged a few times in larger ships in the mailslot and subsequently losing millions of credits because of not being able to untangle from the toaster rack and or slot itself with another persistent large npc ship (T9's and Beluga's I am looking at you) I would be in favor of this being changed in the game in the future. Logging out to avoid ship destruction by the station is an option and I have done it once (recently to avoid a 25 mil. rebuy) but it made me feel like a dirty exploiter after doing it.

My favorite Elite quote is still the station wide announcement: "Loitering is a crime, punishable by death!"
