Bobble heads!!!!

Beta Bobblehead . . .

View attachment 25006

I was involved in the very late stages of Beta testing of Elite: Dangerous and the attached image shows a neat little 'bobblehead' character which used to sit right next to where the compass hologram on the console of my Sidewinder is during training. I've no idea what this little guy is called or whether or not he will be implemented again for ELITE: Dangerous but I happened to like it and especially enjoyed how it reflected movement when the vessel was put into turns and on landing seemed to pop-it's head when the vessel dropped onto the landing pad. So, the real question is, is this 'bobblehead' going to be a feature that we will be seeing again? Or is it still part of Elite and I simply have not seen another one since the Beta stage? I'm currently flying a Cobra MK III, but none of my former vessels (Sidewinder, Hauler, Adder (and I have a Eagle in storage)) do not have the option for this item.

The image has been cleaned-up a little for presentation purposes, but otherwise appears as it did on screen captures that I made during testing.

Same here. I'm pretty sure I saw it in a recent video so I guess it's still around. Could be wrong though, I've watched so many Elite videos lately

I had this in Beta also. I believe they decided to remove it for the full release of the game, not sure why. I wish it would come back though, it was kinda fun to have. I remember having the little Christmas Tree most of the time. :)

I saw it too in one of the demo videos for the game on the main page.

While I hate making the excuses for FDev. Maybe it was just too resource intensive? Might seem silly but that could have been the case or it caused issues with other features that were added later so they had to scrap it. You'd be surprised how one thing can affect other things in programming.

The loss of the bobbleheads during beta made the online/offline argument look a picnic. Brothers against sisters, sons against fathers, it was truly awful. The physical scars have healed, but the emotional ones will go with some us to the grave.

If I recall correctly it was removed for performance reasons, think it was fps issues.

Almost certainly for performance reasons, which is also why the Sidewnder cokcpit textures and detail were significantly downgraded during beta from the early standard beta game that I played. And if they are that close to performance limits in the game with so much yet to add I am worried. Either way I personally would much rather have bobbleheads in the game than the multiplayer part or Wings and its a shame they had to get rid of it.

I think the reason maybe why people liked it so much was because its the only sign of lightness, fun and a human touch in an otherwise very stale game (at the moment). In terms of these factors I find ED, as it is, well below Frontier and FFE.

Not a beta tester. I saw some videos with that dashboard figure and I'd really would like one. They are a fun, light contrast to the overall dark theme (which is great) of the game.

I'd like there to be a variety of dashboard add-ons. Personally I'd love a Colonel Kilgore-style big coffee mug sitting casually on my expensive, futuristic Asp controls. Complete with ring marks.

I recall it in beta, you could have that or the christmas tree

IT was useful to know angular velocity; when you would use thrusters with assist off; it would react to acceleration in a very fun way :) When docked, you could tell the rotation direction of the station, then it would go crazy when you would take off.

Not sure why they removed it; it was not a matter of being much of an overhead for performances, but I believe it was removed because it never worked as expected :) Out of the blue it would just go crazy, s better remove it than waste time to fix it.

it may appear in the shop ;)

I've never really understood why they would remove features or capabilities for performance reasons. Why not make those features optional according to the spec of the individual machine like many other games do?

My comment applies to bobbleheads but also to other features which appeared to be removed or downgraded during beta.
