The trailer was an absolute joke, looked like Call of Duty in space, which is exactly the game I don't want to play. Mercifully, though often annoyingly bugged because it was rushed out far too early to meet Christmas sales, the real game itself is far better than the mindless action-packed thriller the trailer pretends it is. It's one of the very few games that combines intelligence with action perfectly, because when intense action comes along, for example, in a PVP or PVE conflict zone, it really is fast and frightening. That this combat occurs infrequently actually makes the combat itself feel more intense.
And yes, it really is very silly indeed to go ahead and purchase a game on the basis of having watched a trailer, but plenty of people do exactly that anyway, that's why trailers work! I have no idea why Frontier would make a trailer that pretends Elite is something it's not...
